    Culture Note™

Designed by Peter Moore and released on 22 April 2022 as part of Nike's Dunk line. This release has a leather upper in Chlorophyll/White/Vivid Green. Vivid Green is a colour that does not apologise. On a Dunk Low Retro it works because the silhouette is essentially a canvas: two tone panels, a huge Swoosh, a flat profile, nothing else asking for attention. Nike arrived at this kind of graphic confidence early. The Swoosh was drawn by a design student, Carolyn Davidson, first used in June 1971 and registered as a trademark in January 1974, and by 1980 the company held roughly half the US athletic shoe market, which is what allows a shoe to be sold on colour alone. Retro in the name means the shoe is being reissued in its original proportions rather than updated, so what you are buying is the classic shape wearing a loud modern colour.
Two ways to run it. First, the muted frame: black or washed grey trousers, a heavyweight white tee, a grey zip up, so the green is a single deliberate hit. Second, colour on colour: cream or khaki chinos with a navy knit, which lets the green sit as a natural rather than neon note. It is a summer and spring shoe, best on dry pavement, and it works for gigs, weekends and anywhere the outfit is otherwise quiet. Dunks fit true to size with a narrow forefoot, so wide feet should go half a size up. Brush the panels dry, use a mild cleaner on the base rather than bleach, treat with a protector before the first wear, and dry away from radiators so the green does not dull.
The Dunk's rise had nothing to do with basketball performance and everything to do with what Nike became in the 1980s. Michael Jordan signed in 1984, the Spike Lee directed Mars Blackmon adverts followed, and from there Nike models turned into status symbols in urban and hip hop fashion before settling into mainstream American youth dress. The Dunk inherited all of it as the affordable, endlessly recoloured version of that status. Bright colourways are how the model keeps talking to a new audience each cycle: same shape, new noise. Vivid Green is a shoe that photographs, which is now part of the specification whether Nike says so or not.
Style code DJ6188 300 puts this in Nike's green range, and the Dunk Low Retro build is the standard one: panelled upper over a cupsole, foam padded collar, stitched Swoosh running across the midfoot doing structural work as well as branding. The Dunk sits lower and flatter than an Air Force 1, with no visible Air unit, so the ride is firm and close to the ground, which is exactly why skaters adopted the silhouette in the first place. A saturated green on the overlays against a paler base means scuffing shows as a colour shift rather than dirt. Lace it through all eyelets if you want the collar to hold shape, because the Dunk collapses at the ankle when under laced.
