Designed by Peter Moore and released on 15 February 2022 as part of Nike's Dunk line. This release has a leather upper in Cool Grey/Black/Anthracite. Scrap in its base form is the most Bowerman thing Nike has made in decades. The founding piece of the company's engineering came from a coach pouring rubber into his wife's waffle iron because he wanted a lighter sole and had no factory to ask, and that improvisation produced the tread behind the 1972 Moon Shoe and the 1974 Waffle Trainer. Scrap applies the same logic to the upper, building it from offcuts and leftover material so the panels do not match and the shoe looks assembled rather than designed. The result is a Dunk that admits it was made in a factory, out of what the factory had.
Mismatched panels need a calm outfit and good light. Grey wide leg trousers with a white tee, or washed black denim with a cream sweatshirt, so the panel variation reads as intentional rather than as a fault. Avoid anything patterned above the ankle. This is a daytime shoe and a dry weather one, because mixed materials take water at different rates and the pair can end up looking uneven after a single soaking. Half a size down suits most feet on this deliberately long last. Do not try to clean them into uniformity, and do not replace the insole, since the details are part of what you bought.
Nike Grind takes manufacturing scrap and worn shoes back into new product and into surfaces, and it has been quietly running in the background of the company's output for years. Scrap is the version you can see. There is a real tension in it: this is a brand whose signature technologies, from the waffle outsole to Nike Air to ZoomX, the altered Pebax foam used in the Vaporfly, are all about adding something new. A shoe made from what was left over argues the opposite case, from inside the same building.
A Dunk Low built from surplus and offcut materials, which means panel to panel variation in texture, tone and finish, over the standard padded collar and tongue, foam sockliner and rubber cupsole. Two pairs are not guaranteed to look alike, and neither are the two shoes in one pair. That variation is also the care instruction: each panel needs its own treatment, dry brushing for napped surfaces, a barely damp cloth for smooth ones, nothing aggressive anywhere. Underfoot it is the plain Dunk experience, flat and firm and low, with the vamp creasing in the first week. The construction is standard even when the materials are not.
