    Culture Note™

Designed by Peter Moore and released on 20 October 2025 as part of the Air Jordan 1 line. This release has the Black/Anthracite/Tour Yellow colourway. Elephant print is the single most recognisable material code Jordan Brand owns. It arrived on the Air Jordan 3, the model Tinker Hatfield used to turn a basketball shoe into a design series with its own language, and the grey cracked pattern now signals the brand on its own, without a Jumpman anywhere near it. Putting it on a black Air Jordan 1 Low borrows a code from one model and applies it to the shape that started everything, the pattern Peter Moore drew with Bruce Kilgore for the shoe that reached the public on 1 April 1985. That cross reference is the whole idea here: two eras of the line stacked into one low top.
Let the print be the only pattern in the room. First: black straight leg denim, a plain grey tee, a black jacket, socks black, so the elephant panels are the sole texture from head to floor. Second: washed grey sweats and a white tee, letting the cracked pattern supply all the visual interest in a deliberately blank fit. Never pair with checks, camo or stripes. Fine for everyday wear, since black and textured grey are the two most dust tolerant surfaces you can put on a shoe. Brush the print with a soft dry brush before any wet cleaning, use foam sparingly on the black leather, avoid solvents, and dry away from heat.
Elephant print carries more brand recognition than most logos, which is why it keeps migrating across the line. Its home model, the Air Jordan 3, is also the shoe that introduced the Jumpman on the tongue, replacing the winged basketball of the earliest era. The mark itself came from Peter Moore having Jordan recreate a leaping pose in Bulls gear after seeing a Jacobus Rentmeester photograph shot before the 1984 Olympics, a lineage Rentmeester challenged in court in 2015 before the Ninth Circuit affirmed dismissal in February 2018. Wearing the print on a 1 is a quiet insider move: it reads as pattern to most people and as a specific citation to anyone who knows the line.
The low cut gives you the original separated panel layout with the ankle collar removed, and elephant print does something specific on that structure: a broken, cracked texture set against flat black leather creates depth where a two colour scheme would only create edges. Practically, textured panels are the most forgiving surfaces on any sneaker, since they scatter light and hide the small marks that flat leather displays. Nike Air did not enter the signature line until the Air Jordan 2, so this rides flat and firm with no cushioning unit underfoot. The one caution is cleaning: dirt settles into the print's texture and stays there, so brush the pattern gently and often rather than scrubbing it once a season.
