    The slide is the least ceremonial thing Nike makes, and that is precisely the brief for the Kobe Offcourt. Nike has been the on court uniform supplier to the NBA, the WNBA and the NBA G League since 2017, under a deal signed in June 2015 and extended for a further twelve years in an announcement made in October 2024, which means it also owns the hours around the game: the walk to the bus, the treatment table, the flight home. This is footwear for those hours. It carries the Kobe line, one of the signature families the company built after learning in 1984, through the Michael Jordan signing, that a basketball athlete could anchor a business rather than just a shoe.

    Recipe one: black shorts, a loose tee, crew socks pulled to mid calf, the standard post gym uniform that the slide was actually designed for. Recipe two: straight leg trousers with a plain tee for a summer errand run, worn barefoot so the footbed reads as intended. Sizing on slides tends to run generous through the band, so if you are between sizes take the smaller unless you plan to wear thick socks. Keep them for warm weather, poolside, hotel corridors and the hour after training rather than long walking days, since there is no structure to fight fatigue. Rinse chlorine and salt off the footbed each time, otherwise the surface hardens and grips less.

They arrived in general wardrobes through the same channel that carried Air Jordans and Air Force 1s from the court into everyday American dress from the 1980s onward, only without the ceremony. Nike's own language has always been about the doing rather than the outfit, which is what Dan Wieden compressed into Just Do It in 1988.     A slide is an exercise in subtraction. One band across the forefoot, a moulded footbed underneath, no laces, no closure, nothing to adjust. That leaves the footbed doing all the work, which is why the shape of it matters more here than any material spec: a contoured bed holds the arch and stops the foot sliding forward on a downhill, while a flat one turns into a flip flop within a week. Slides are the last thing you want to force dry with heat, since foam beds distort permanently. Rinse with cold water, press the moisture out with a towel and let them air dry flat, out of the sun.
