Released on 22 November 2023 and part of New Balance's 1906 line. This release has a mesh upper in Eclipse/Silver Metallic/Crimson. The Protection Pack treats a New Balance runner the way a workwear designer treats a jacket, stripping the finish back until the shoe looks like it has already been through something. On the 1906D, a variant of the technical 1906 family from the brand's two thousands running catalogue, that treatment lands hard, because the underlying shape is all exposed structure and engineered panelling to begin with. Eclipse takes it dark. The result is a shoe that reads as equipment rather than as product, which is a strange but consistent place for New Balance to end up, given it started in 1906 as an arch support company solving a problem rather than selling an image.
Utility
Dress it heavy: black or charcoal wide trousers, a dark overshirt or shell jacket, boots season layering without the boots, so the shoe reads as part of a functional silhouette. The second recipe is simpler, raw indigo denim and a grey sweat, where the eclipse tones anchor a plain fit. This is a long day city shoe and a strong travel choice, not a training shoe. Construction
The upper layers engineered mesh with suede and synthetic overlays in the 1906 family's busy panel arrangement, worked in eclipse tones so the seams and layers read as relief rather than colour. The Protection Pack finish gives the surfaces a raw, unpolished character, and the dark palette is the practical one, because a stripped upper picks up marks that a lighter build would broadcast. Underfoot the platform uses ABZORB, New Balance's proprietary foam and rubber polymer blend that disperses heel strike impact before it travels into the knees and hips, plusher and lighter than ENCAP and less structurally supportive. Multiple width fittings are the brand's oldest technical promise, so choose by foot shape rather than adding length.
