New Balance was founded in 1906 near Boston by William J Riley, an Irish immigrant, as the New Balance Arch Support Company, and the 1906 name is the company signing its own work. The R models take that founding year and put it on a running derived silhouette, which is honest, because running is the one thread that has never left this brand: the Trackster in 1960, the first running shoe offered in varying widths, then decades of amateur road running and a long relationship with New York Road Runners. Green Black is the serious version of the shape. The green does the identifying, the black grounds it, and the code M1906RCG puts it in the men's performance run rather than the lifestyle one.
