New Balance 1906R Salehe Bembury Heat Be Hot Lava
New Balance 1906R Salehe Bembury Heat Be Hot Lava
Culture Note™
Origin
Released on 11 January 2024 and part of New Balance's 1906 line. This release has a mesh upper in Orange/Yellow/Silver. The 1906R comes from the last generation of New Balance runners built purely as running technology, before the archive became a wardrobe. Reissued for the street, it kept the busy panelling and hardware that made those shoes look like equipment. This pair carries Salehe Bembury's name, which places it in the designer led half of the brand's collaboration programme, the side built on independents rather than stadium famous athletes. Hot Lava is the point: a molten red orange laid over a silhouette that spent its first life in greys and silvers. Where the standard 1906R hides its engineering behind neutrals, this one lights it up, so every panel line and every layer becomes something you actually read.
Utility
Hot lava is a shoe that decides the outfit, so keep everything else quiet and let it be the event. First recipe: black technical trousers with a black half zip, so the orange reads as the only signal in an all dark fit. Second: light grey sweatpants and a washed white hoodie, where the warmth of the lava tone lifts the whole thing out of gym clothes. Best for daytime, city walking and dry weather. Sizing runs true, and the width options are the right fix for a broad foot rather than going up a length. Wipe the synthetic panels with a damp cloth, clean the mesh with a soft brush only, and keep bright uppers out of direct sun for long periods.
Influence
New Balance builds its collaborations around designers and independents rather than mass celebrity, which is why its loudest shoes usually come from people with a point of view rather than a contract. That approach was formalised when Aime Leon Dore founder Teddy Santis became creative director of Made in USA in April 2021, but it had been the pattern for years, and it explains why the brand can hand a technical runner to an outside designer and let the result be genuinely strange. The 1906R sits at the centre of that, an equipment shoe from the running side of the house rewired by the fashion side, without either half pretending the other does not exist.
Construction
A layered upper of mesh and synthetic panels with visible overlays, the construction language of a technical runner rather than a court shoe, and the hot lava tone is used to separate those layers instead of unify them. The block N sits inside that panelling rather than on top of it. Underfoot the 1906R keeps the cushioned running platform and a segmented outsole with exposed sections, which is why it feels engineered rather than casual once you walk in it. New Balance's multiple width fittings, inherited from the arch support business it started as, are worth using here, because a busy synthetic upper holds its shape and will not accommodate a foot it was not sized for.
