Origin
Released on 5 January 2025 and part of New Balance's 550 line. This release has a leather upper in White/Black. Grey, white and black is the most basic set of colours available and the hardest to make interesting, which is why it belongs on the 550. This is a flat court derived shape with broad panels and no layering to hide behind, so a three tone neutral build is an honest test of the silhouette. It also happens to be exactly the palette this brand is known for, since the 990 family made grey the New Balance default and the industry has been catching up to that ever since. The company started in 1906 near Boston making arch supports rather than shoes, and neutral, functional, unshowy is its native register. The code BB550GWB places it in the basketball line.
Utility
Two recipes. Black straight leg denim with a white tee and a grey zip hoodie puts every colour in the shoe somewhere in the outfit, which is the simplest way to make neutrals look planned. Or navy chinos with a cream knit, where the grey works as a bridge between warm and cool. Construction
