Designed by Tinker Hatfield and released on 17 December 2023 as part of Nike's Air Max 90 line. This release has a leather upper in Sail/Vintage Green/Coconut Milk/White. Air Max began in 1987, when Nike stopped hiding the pressurised gas unit in the midsole and put a window in the foam so you could see the cushioning working. The 90 is the generation where that idea settled into its most balanced form, with a chunky window framed by panelled overlays. This women's build in Sail with Vintage Green trades the model's usual bright contrast for something aged: an off white base that reads soft rather than stark, and a muted green that behaves like faded sportswear rather than a team colour. It is the archive shoe treated as a wardrobe object, which is how most Air Max 90s are actually worn now.
Muted colours make this the most flexible Air Max. Wear with straight leg cream trousers and an olive knit for a tonal fit that reads considered rather than sporty. Or go the other way with black leggings, an oversized grey sweatshirt and white socks for a straightforward daily uniform. Air Max 90s fit true to size for most people but run slightly narrow at the toe, so wide feet should size up half. Good for city walking, travel and casual days; not a running shoe, despite the lineage. Sail suede stains permanently, so spray with a protector before first wear, brush dry rather than washing, and keep them off wet streets during monsoon if you want the off white to stay off white.
Air Max models became staples of mainstream American youth dress from the 1980s, sitting beside Air Jordans and Air Force 1s as the Nike shoes that carried the brand out of athletics and into everyday clothing, then returning through the 1990s and 2000s casual and athleisure waves. The 90 in particular became a European and Indian city shoe, worn far from any track. Nike's engineering credibility behind that popularity was real: the Air unit was a genuine cushioning advance, not a graphic. A muted Sail and Vintage Green colourway is what happens when a performance icon has been in the culture long enough that people want it to look quiet.
The 90's structure is panels: leather and suede overlays laid over mesh, with the mudguard, eyestay and heel counter each doing structural work while also drawing the shape. Underneath is Nike Air, the sealed pressurised unit visible through the sidewall window, which is what gives the model its distinctive heel strike feel. Sail across the upper means the panelling has to carry the design, and Vintage Green picks out the overlays and the Air window surround so the eye can still read the layers. Off white materials show wear honestly, so this pair will develop a used look faster than a white leather shoe. The waffle inspired outsole traces directly back to Bowerman's rubber poured into a waffle iron.
