Origin
Ekiden is the Japanese long distance relay, a team format where runners hand over a sash rather than a baton and where the whole point is that no single athlete carries the race. Building a pack around it is a smart piece of design thinking, because a relay implies a set of shoes that belong together and read as a group rather than as one hero colourway. The platform underneath is the second version of the Alphafly, part of the racing family that began when Nike paired ZoomX, its altered Pebax foam, with a full length carbon fibre plate in the 2017 Vaporfly, a combination peer research found could improve marathon times by up to 4.2 percent.
Utility
Two uses. First, relays and road racing, which is exactly what it was designed for, from short relay legs up to the marathon, where the plate rewards holding one pace for a long time. Second, sparingly in training, a session or two at race effort so your legs learn the platform before you need it. These are not daily trainers and treating them as one wastes the foam. Size as you normally would with a thumbnail of room, and race in thin socks because the upper has no lining. Wipe them down after each use, dry at room temperature away from radiators, keep them off gravel, and store flat so the plate is not held under tension.
Influence
Japan is one of the few places where distance running is genuinely a mainstream spectator sport, and a pack named for its relay tradition is Nike acknowledging an audience rather than instructing one. The brand's own running history runs through Bill Bowerman's search for lighter shoes, Steve Prefontaine as its first track endorser and enduring symbol, and a roster that has included Sebastian Coe, Carl Lewis, Michael Johnson and Allyson Felix. The Just Do It line, first aired in 1988 with 80 year old runner Walt Stack, framed running as attitude rather than achievement, which is close to how amateur relay culture actually feels. This pack sells that feeling in a race shoe.
Construction
This is a plated racer built as a single system: a light responsive foam stack, a rigid plate running the full length of the shoe to stiffen the platform and roll the foot forward, and an upper reduced to a thin, breathable shell that locates the foot and does nothing else. The second generation is the more settled of the family, with a slightly more forgiving upper than the original had. World Athletics rules from 31 January 2020 cap sole thickness at 40mm, allow one rigid plate and require four months of open retail availability, and compliant models remain legal for competition. In practice you get a shoe that feels purposeful only at pace and vague when you slow down.
