Designed by Peter Moore and released on 26 October 2022 as part of Nike's Dunk line. This release has a leather upper in Phantom/Black/Safety Orange. Seasonal releases are the low stakes end of sneaker design, which is precisely why they get away with more. The Halloween 2022 grade school Dunk Low, style code DH9765 003, works a black and orange palette that needs no explanation anywhere in the world, delivered on the silhouette that has become the default first proper sneaker for a lot of teenagers. Nike has built calendar releases into its business since it became big enough to own the calendar, holding about half the US athletic shoe market by 1980 and going public the same year. A holiday Dunk is that scale showing up as playfulness: an ordinary court shoe given one specific week to belong to and then worn year round anyway.
Recipe one: black jeans, an orange graphic tee and a black bomber, a straight read of the colourway that suits the season it was named for. Recipe two: grey sweatpants with a black hoodie and white socks, keeping the orange as a single accent so the shoe works through the rest of the year. Black hides scuffing, which makes this a practical school shoe rather than a display piece. Wipe the orange panels with a barely damp cloth, since bright dye lifts under harsh cleaners. Grade school Dunks should be bought with growing room at the toe rather than a snug fit, and rotating two pairs will keep the midsole foam from flattening early.
Nike's whole modern identity was assembled in the late 1980s: Air Max in 1987, the Michael Jordan signing of 1984 growing into its own business, and Just Do It arriving in 1988 to give the company a voice that reached past sport. Once a brand has that voice, it can sell a shoe on a mood rather than a performance claim, and a Halloween colourway is exactly that. It also fits the way the Swoosh became a status symbol in youth dress from the 1980s, staples of American teenage wardrobes that resurfaced in 1990s and 2000s casual wear. Black and orange has since become an autumn shorthand far beyond the holiday that started it.
Black and orange is the strongest contrast pairing a two tone Dunk can use, and the silhouette's separate panels give both colours clean edges: toe, mudguard, quarter, Swoosh and heel each read as their own block. Themed releases usually carry their extras where they cost nothing structurally, at the tongue label, insole print and lace choices, which is where you should look for the seasonal detailing on this pair. Underneath sits the standard grade school Dunk build, a foam midsole with no visible air unit and a rubber outsole with a pivot circle, so the ride is flat, firm and close to the ground. The scaled last runs slightly narrower than the adult version.
