Culture Note™
Designed by Peter Moore and released on 1 April 2024 as part of Nike's Dunk line. This release has a canvas upper in Sail/Pacific Moss/Cream/Limestone. Since 72 is a reference to the year the company stopped being an importer and started being itself. Blue Ribbon Sports had been distributing Onitsuka Tiger since 1964, selling shoes out of the boot of Phil Knight's car at track meets, and that relationship ended in 1972, the year the Nike line went out under its own name with the Swoosh that Carolyn Davidson had drawn the year before. Pacific Moss puts that anniversary language on a colour with no sporting reference at all, a soft, greyed green that belongs to landscape rather than to a team. The combination is the point: an origin story printed on a shoe that owes nothing to competition.
Two ways to wear it. Ecru wide leg trousers with a cream knit and a brown belt, letting the muted green read as an earth tone rather than as a colour. Or black straight jeans with an olive overshirt, doubling the green so the shoe looks planned. Dusty greens go well with cream, brown, tan and washed indigo and badly with anything bright. This is a daytime and weekend shoe, good for markets, travel and long walks. Size true. For care, protect before first wear because muted dyes lift unevenly, clean spots with a soft brush and foam cleaner the same day, and keep it out of hard sun which will pull the green towards grey.
It is worth being accurate about what 1972 means. Nike was not founded that year and it was not founded in 1971 either; the company dates to 25 January 1964, when Bill Bowerman and Phil Knight started Blue Ribbon Sports in Eugene, Oregon. What 1972 marks is independence. Everything Nike is culturally known for came after: the Air Max in 1987, the Jordan signing in 1984 with Spike Lee's Mars Blackmon advertising, and Just Do It, written by Dan Wieden in 1988 and now held in the Smithsonian. A heritage colourway is the company selling the beginning of the story to people who arrived through the middle of it.
The green does the work here. Pacific Moss is a desaturated, dusty green, which means it functions as a neutral in most outfits and changes noticeably between daylight and artificial light. On a Dunk Low that colour lands across the overlays, leaving the base to carry the lighter tone, so the panel lines stay legible without any hard contrast. Since 72 releases carry heritage detailing in place of team blocking, which typically means the branding changes rather than the pattern. Underneath, the platform is the standard Dunk: a low collar, a flat rubber sole, no cushioning technology and a firm, close to the ground ride that suits walking better than running.
