Origin
Released on 20 December 2025 and part of the Run Defy line. This release has a mesh upper in White/Black. Running is the root of the company, not a category it added later. Nike exists because Bill Bowerman, a track coach at the University of Oregon, thought American runners were badly served, and because his former athlete Phil Knight was willing to sell Japanese running shoes out of his car at track meets from 1964. Bowerman later poured rubber into a waffle iron to get a lighter sole, which produced the 1972 Moon Shoe and the 1974 Waffle Trainer. The Run Defy, style code HM9594 102, sits at the accessible end of that inheritance, in plain White and Black. It is not the halo shoe, it is the daily one, which is the tier where Nike has always made its actual living.
Utility
Two uses. One, its intended job: easy paced road mileage, with a technical sock and laces locked through the top eyelet to stop heel slip on longer efforts. Two, off duty, because white and black is the most flexible sneaker palette there is: black joggers or straight leg denim with a white or grey top, worn as a plain trainer rather than a statement. Running shoes generally want a half size up over your casual size to allow for foot swell on longer runs. Rotate them with another pair to let the foam recover between runs, keep them out of the dryer, air them after wet weather, and clean the white upper with a soft brush rather than bleach.
Influence
Nike's first cultural foothold was track, through Steve Prefontaine, Bowerman's pupil at Oregon and the company's first track endorser, who now has a statue at Nike headquarters and who established running as attitude rather than merely sport. The advertising sealed it: Just Do It, written in 1988, launched with an 80 year old runner named Walt Stack, not a champion, which is the most honest statement Nike ever made about who its running shoes are actually for. A daily trainer in white and black is the direct descendant of that idea. It is the shoe for the person running because they run, not because they are racing anybody.
Construction
Nike's running range is stratified by foam. At the top sits ZoomX, an altered Pebax that is the lightest and most responsive material the company makes, paired with a full length carbon fibre plate in the Vaporfly to generate extra spring; below that sit the everyday foams that prioritise durability and price over race day return. The Run Defy belongs to that everyday tier, and understanding it that way is useful: it is built to absorb the repeated, unglamorous miles rather than to shave seconds. In White and Black the construction is easy to follow, because the black elements mark out the structural parts of the upper against a white base. Expect the white to show mileage before the shoe stops performing.
