Designed by Peter Moore and released on 15 July 2012 as part of Nike's Dunk SB line. This release has the Black/Black-Filbert colourway. Nike SB's most memorable releases have usually come from handing the Dunk to somebody outside the building, and the Pushead pairs are the darkest end of that practice: illustration led, skull heavy, closer to a record sleeve than to sportswear. This is the second of them, which matters, because the first established that the audience would accept graphic art on a shoe that started as a basketball silhouette. Nike had by then spent decades learning that its shapes could carry other people's ideas, ever since the Swoosh drawn by design student Carolyn Davidson in 1971 became a surface that anything could be printed alongside.
Two ways. One, dark and graphic: black jeans, a black band or graphic tee, a leather jacket, letting the shoe's artwork be part of the same visual family. Two, plain foil: grey trousers, a white tee, an olive jacket, so the illustration is the only busy element in the fit. Treat these as a wear carefully pair even though they are skate built, because artwork does not survive griptape. Brush dust off gently, avoid solvents and strong cleaners on any printed panel, spot clean with a damp cloth, and store them out of direct light so the graphics do not fade unevenly.
Nike's relationship with music and underground art has produced its sharpest lessons. In 1987 the company used the Beatles' Revolution after paying Capitol Records 250,000 dollars without Apple Records' approval, and the resulting 15 million dollar lawsuit ended the ads in March 1988. In 2005 Nike SB used Minor Threat's album art on a tour flyer, drew a public rebuke from Ian MacKaye and apologised on 27 June 2005 before settling out of court. Artist led releases are the correct version of that impulse: commission the work instead of borrowing it. That is why illustration collaborations carry weight in skating that appropriations never did.
The SB Dunk build adds skate specific comfort to the Dunk Low outline: a thickly padded tongue and collar, extra cushioning under the heel for repeated landings, and a flat outsole in the waffle tradition Bowerman started, which is what gives board feel. On a graphic release the printed and tooled areas are the parts that age fastest, so the way you clean matters more than usual. Expect a fuller fit than a general release Dunk because of the padding, a short break in, and a shoe that will crease across the toe box in the first month regardless of how carefully you walk.
