    Culture Note™

Released on 19 September 2023 and part of Nike's Zoom Fly 5 line. This release has a mesh upper in Black/Sail/Metallic Gold Grain. Every racing programme needs a shoe you can actually train in, and the Zoom Fly is Nike's answer to that gap. The racing side of the story starts in 2017, when the Vaporfly paired ZoomX, Nike's altered Pebax foam, with a full length carbon fibre plate, and peer research found the combination could improve marathon times by as much as 4.2 percent. The Zoom Fly line takes the shape and the intent of that project and builds it for the miles before race day. This fifth version comes in black with metallic gold grain, a finish that keeps the shoe looking serious on the start line and unremarkable at the coffee shop afterwards.
Two uses. Tempo day: black shorts, a technical tee, and this shoe for the intervals where you want the plate to work, with the rest of the week spent in something softer. Travel day: black tapered joggers and a bomber, the gold grain catching just enough light to stop the fit looking like gym kit. Fit is snug through the midfoot, so consider a half size up if you run in thicker socks or swell on long efforts. Build up in this shoe rather than jumping straight to a long run, because a plate changes how your calves load, and never put it through a washing machine, which destroys foam and adhesives together.
Distance running is Nike's oldest and most sincere ground. Steve Prefontaine was the first track athlete the company endorsed and his statue stands at the headquarters in Beaverton, where Nike moved in 1990. Sebastian Coe, Carl Lewis and Michael Johnson followed him onto the roster, and the modern marathon boom has made shoes like this one a public argument about what technology is allowed to do for a runner. World Athletics set the boundaries on 31 January 2020, capping sole thickness at 40mm and permitting one rigid plate, and requiring shoes to be available at retail. Wearing a plated trainer is a small statement about which side of that argument you enjoy.
A plated trainer is a different proposition from a plated racer. You get a stiffer ride than a soft daily shoe, a rolling feeling through the forefoot, and a durability bias that racing foams do not have. Nike's cushioning language runs from the pressurised Air unit sealed in the midsole, visible since the 1987 Air Max, through to lightweight foams like Lunarlite and the ZoomX chemistry at the top of the range. What that means underfoot is propulsion you should learn gradually. Black uppers hide road spray well, so this pair will look fresher for longer, but the metallic gold grain will dull with abrasion, so avoid brushes on the shine and clean with a damp cloth.
