Released on 14 December 2023 and part of Nike's Dunk SB line. This release has a suede upper in Lotus Pink/Digital Pink/Medium Soft Pink. Nike has been putting art on shoes with increasing seriousness, including work with artist Takashi Murakami, who designed a Nike related digital piece in 2022, and the acquisition of the virtual sneaker studio RTFKT in December 2021. Character licensing sits in the same territory: it is a question of whose drawing gets to sit on the panel. This SB Dunk Low Pro gives the shoe to Blossom, the red one and the leader of the trio, and builds the colourway around her rather than splitting the palette across a set. Red does something different to the Dunk than blue does. It reads as authority instead of play, which suits the character and gives the pair a distinctly different temperature to its siblings.
Red is the loudest thing you will wear, so build down from it. Recipe one: black jeans with a black or charcoal hoodie and a denim jacket, where the shoe supplies the only heat in the outfit. Recipe two: washed grey sweats and a white tee, a soft base that lets the red pop without the fit tipping into costume. Skip pairing with orange, burgundy or pink, which all fight red at close range. This is a weekend, skate and going out shoe, and the SB padding makes it comfortable for long standing days. Size like a standard SB Dunk Low. Nike SB's whole history is a negotiation over borrowed imagery, and it has not always gone well: the 2005 appropriation of Minor Threat's album art drew a public rebuke from Ian MacKaye and a Nike apology. Licensed character shoes are the settled version of that fight, cleared and paid for, which frees them to be purely fun. The bigger context is a company that made hip hop and basketball its main cultural channel after signing Michael Jordan in 1984 and running Spike Lee's Mars Blackmon advertising, and that has since learned to treat art and IP as a category worth negotiating properly rather than lifting.
This is the Dunk Low Pro spec Nike SB uses, so the padding around the tongue and collar is thicker than a lifestyle Dunk and the forefoot sits flat and wide for board feel. The red base carries the character work through panel colour and detailing rather than through a large graphic print, which is why the shoe still functions as a skate shoe and not a poster. Red panels are practical: they hold saturation and hide creasing better than pale colours, though the midsole will always be the first thing to age. The tread follows the outsole logic Bowerman began when he pressed rubber into a waffle iron, built to grip a surface rather than look clever.
