Culture Note™
Part of the Adilette line. This release has a leather upper in Core Black/Footwear White/Core Black. The Adilette is adidas at its most utilitarian, a poolside and locker-room slide that has been part of the brand's furniture for decades and never pretended to be anything else. The Comfort Adjustable version adds a fastening across the bridge, which changes the shoe from a slip-on into something that actually stays put on a wet floor. Black with white is the original arrangement, dark strap and pale Three Stripes, and it is the most recognisable adidas object outside a sneaker. The company that built its identity on the Three Stripes bought from Karhu Sports in 1952 has never needed more than that mark to make a slide read as adidas from across a pool deck.
Two obvious uses and both are correct. First, recovery: wear them straight after training or a run with thick crew socks and shorts, letting the moulded footbed take pressure off a tired arch. Second, warm weather casual: black slides with wide linen trousers or shorts and a plain tee, where the white Three Stripes are the only graphic element. Adjust the strap so the foot sits centred, not squeezed, since slides work by suspension rather than lockdown. Rinse after pool or beach use because chlorine and salt degrade synthetic straps. Air dry away from radiators and sun, and never machine wash them.
Slides carry adidas branding into places sneakers never reach: locker rooms, hotel corridors, dorm floors and gym showers. That ubiquity is part of why the Three Stripes became a language rather than a logo, the same reach that let a shoe like the Superstar be adopted wholesale by hip hop after Run-DMC recorded My Adidas in 1986 without being paid. adidas has been in the everyday habits of athletes since Adi Dassler was making shoes by watching them work, and the Adilette is the least glamorous evidence of that, the product people put on immediately after the performance one comes off.
A synthetic strap with an adjustable closure over a moulded footbed and outsole, which is what separates the Comfort line from the plain Adilette: contoured cushioning under the arch rather than a flat plank. The Three Stripes appear on the strap as the identifying element, which on adidas products descends from a mark that was structural on shoes long before it was decorative. Slides are the easiest adidas product to clean: rinse under a tap, wipe with a cloth and air dry away from direct heat, which warps moulded footbeds. The adjustable fastening is the only moving part, so avoid over-tightening it, which stresses the strap anchor.
