Part of New Balance's 574 line. This release has a suede upper in Black/Marblehead. The 574 carries New Balance's founding logic further than any other model in the line. The company began in 1906 near Boston as the New Balance Arch Support Company, making arch supports rather than shoes, and everything that followed answered one question: how do you give a working foot the support it does not naturally have. The 574 is that question turned into an everyday trainer, a running shoe built to be worn by people who are not running. Legacy is the version that keeps the original proportions rather than slimming them for fashion, and Black Marblehead sets a full black upper against the grey the brand is known for, naming the shade after a stretch of the Massachusetts coast the company has always lived beside.
Utility
Black with grey is the version of the 574 you can wear to work. First recipe: charcoal trousers, a black knit and a grey overcoat, treating the shoe as the punctuation at the end of a tonal outfit. Second: black straight leg jeans with a washed olive chore jacket, where the marblehead panels stop the lower half reading as one solid block. The 574 sits low and wide, so it suits a slight break in the hem rather than a stacked one. Take the width fitting seriously, because this is a shoe with a genuinely roomy toe box and the wrong width undoes it. Brush the suede in one direction, never machine wash, and let them dry away from heat so the ENCAP rim does not warp.
Influence
The 574's standing comes from the same accident that made the 990 famous. New Balance built its identity on two things competitors abandoned, domestic manufacturing and technical fit, and ended up with shoes people chose for comfort rather than for the logo. Grey New Balance became the archetypal American dad shoe, and the plainness was reclaimed by normcore and then by high fashion in the 2010s. The 574 is the entry point to that world, the model most people meet first. Its running lineage traces to the Trackster of 1960, the first running shoe offered in varying widths, which spread through YMCA fitness programmes and cross country teams at MIT, Tufts and Boston University long before any of this was a look.
Construction
Suede and mesh, the combination the 574 has always used, in black with marblehead grey breaking up the side wall and the block N. Underneath sits ENCAP, the classic New Balance midsole introduced with the 995 in 1986: a moulded polyurethane rim wrapped around a soft EVA core. The polyurethane holds the shape, resists compression over years of wear and supplies the structure, while the EVA core takes the impact. That is why an old 574 still feels supportive when a foam only shoe of the same age has gone flat. Black hides scuffing well, but black suede also shows salt and water marks faster than grey does, so the trade is honesty about maintenance.
