Designed by Bill Bowerman and released on 2 November 2021 as part of Nike's Blazer line. This release has a leather upper in White/Black/White/Sail. The Jumbo is a joke that turned out to be a good idea. Take the Blazer, a 1970s basketball shoe whose Swoosh was already oversized by modern standards, and make the Swoosh bigger still until it runs almost the full length of the shoe. In white with black, there is nowhere for it to hide, which is the point. The Blazer Mid 77 already trades on being the least engineered shoe Nike sells, a leather style upper, a flat sole, a high collar and nothing else. Exaggerating the one graphic it has is the only way to update a design that has resisted every other kind of update for decades.
Two builds. Monochrome: black straight leg denim or wide trousers, a white tee, a black jacket, so the shoe's contrast repeats the outfit's. Softer: cream or grey trousers with a navy knit, where the white upper keeps things light and the black Swoosh provides the only hard line. The Mid collar likes a trouser that breaks or a cuff that sits just above it; anything cropped short makes the proportion awkward. Blazers run long and narrow, so consider your usual size and a thinner sock. White leather style panels need regular foam cleaning, the midsole responds to an eraser, and heat rather than water is what cracks the upper.
The Swoosh was drawn by Carolyn Davidson, a graphic design student, first used on 18 June 1971 and registered as a trademark on 22 January 1974. It is one of the few marks in the world that works with no name attached to it, and the Jumbo Blazer is the most literal celebration of that fact Nike has made. The company has spent five decades building the mark's authority through Michael Jordan, through Just Do It in 1988, through holding about half the US athletic shoe market by 1980. Blowing the logo up to fill the shoe is a brand saying the quiet part out loud, and the design survives it because the mark is genuinely that good.
A Blazer Mid is honest construction: panelled upper, stitched Swoosh, a padded collar and a flat vulcanised style sole with very little cushioning between you and the pavement. The Jumbo Swoosh is stitched on as a single oversized piece, which means it also acts as structure across the midfoot rather than only as decoration. White with black is the highest contrast version available, so every stitch line on that oversized mark is visible and any sloppiness would show. Nike's grip lineage runs back to Bill Bowerman's waffle iron in the early 1970s, and the Blazer sole sits at the flattest end of it. Condition the leather style panels, clean the white with foam, and expect creasing across the vamp.
