    Culture Note™

Designed by Peter Moore and released on 9 December 2023 as part of Nike's Dunk line. This release has a leather upper in Summit White/Photo Blue/Platinum Tint/White. Nike began in 1964 as Blue Ribbon Sports, a small operation selling Japanese running shoes out of Phil Knight's car at Oregon track meets, and it had no mark of its own until a graphic design student named Carolyn Davidson drew the Swoosh, first used on 18 June 1971 and registered as a trademark on 22 January 1974. The Dunk Low Retro is the silhouette where that mark does the most work. It is a flat, wide, low basketball shape whose panels exist mainly to hold two colours apart, and the Swoosh is the largest of them. Photo Blue runs white leather as the ground and drops one clean, saturated blue across the Swoosh, heel and collar. Nothing here is decorative. The colour is the entire design decision.
Photo Blue is bright enough to lead an outfit and clean enough to disappear into one. Recipe one: mid-wash straight-leg denim, a white heavyweight tee, and a navy crewneck knotted at the shoulder so the blue reads as a deliberate echo rather than an accident. Recipe two: grey pleated trousers cropped at the ankle, a white oxford untucked, no visible sock, which makes the shoe the only colour in an otherwise monochrome look. The Dunk runs long and narrow through the midfoot, so half a size down suits slim feet and true to size suits wide ones. Brush the white leather with a soft nylon brush after each wear, and treat the blue panels with a leather-safe protectant before the first outing rather than after the first stain.
Nike's low-top court shoes stopped being sports equipment somewhere in the 1980s, when Air Jordans, Air Force 1s and Air Max models became staples of mainstream American youth dress and then the backbone of hip hop's relationship with footwear. The Dunk Low sits inside that shift as the colour-first option, the pair you bought for the palette rather than the technology. Photo Blue is a direct descendant of that logic, a school-colour scheme worn by people with no connection to any school. Nike gave the habit a voice in 1988, when Dan Wieden wrote Just Do It for a campaign fronted by 80 year old runner Walt Stack, a line Advertising Age later named one of the century's top five and the Smithsonian now holds.
The retro build is the point: panelled leather across toe, quarter and heel, cut so the Photo Blue reads as a solid block rather than a wash. Perforations sit in the toe box for airflow, a lightly padded collar wraps a low ankle, and a flat rubber cupsole gives you the wide, stable footprint court shoes were originally shaped around. Nike's founding engineering obsession was the outsole, Bill Bowerman pouring rubber into his wife's waffle iron to get something lighter and grippier than the American market offered, and that inheritance shows up here as honest bite on smooth ground. Expect a firm ride rather than a plush one. This is a flat shoe that wants pavement and long walking days, not a training block.
