Designed by Peter Moore and released on 1 August 2024 as part of Nike's Dunk line. This release has a suede upper in Phantom/Gum Light Brown/Coconut Milk/Malachite. The Nike name came from inside the company: employee Jeff Johnson coined it, and the Swoosh that carries it was drawn by graphic design student Carolyn Davidson, first used on 18 June 1971 and registered as a trademark on 22 January 1974. A mark that simple can hold any colour you throw at it, which is why the catalogue can name a Dunk after a mineral and have it land. Malachite is a deep green stone with banding, a colour with weight to it, more jewellery than sportswear. Choosing it for a Dunk Low SE pulls the shoe out of team colour logic entirely and into the register of objects, which is where the silhouette has spent most of the last two decades.
Two builds. One, rich and dark: black wide trousers, a charcoal knit, a leather or suede jacket, so the green reads like an inlay. Two, warm and casual: sand chinos, a white tee, an unlined tan jacket, where malachite becomes the outfit's only cool tone and stops everything looking beige. Strong evening shoe, strong autumn and winter shoe in the north, fine year round in a dry city. Care is about colour protection: brush with the nap, avoid harsh cleaners that lift dye, blot rather than rub if they get wet, and dry them slowly away from direct heat. Keep a soft cloth in your bag for quick evening touch ups.
Nike's connection to art and image making runs deep enough that the brand has worked with artist Takashi Murakami, who designed a Nike related digital work in 2022, and acquired the virtual sneaker studio RTFKT in December 2021. Mineral and pigment named colourways belong to that same instinct, treating a shoe as a coloured object rather than as kit. Meanwhile the Dunk's cultural weight comes from the older route: Nike became a status symbol in urban and hip hop fashion from the 1980s, which is what allows a plain low top in a stone green to carry meaning without a single logo change.
A saturated green needs surface interest or it flattens, and SE releases exist precisely to give the upper that extra material treatment. The Dunk Low's panel structure keeps the tone from becoming a single slab: toe, quarter, Swoosh and heel each catch light differently, so the shoe holds depth from a distance. Underfoot it is the usual Dunk experience, low cut, flat, close to the ground, stable rather than cushioned, best over short and medium distances. The tread's ancestry runs to Bowerman's waffle sole. Deep greens fade in strong sun, so store these in the dark and keep them out of long Indian afternoons.
