Culture Note™
Released on 19 September 2023 and part of Nike's ZoomX VaporFly Next% 3 line. This release has a flyknit upper in Black/Black/Oatmeal/Metallic Gold Grain. This is the shoe the rules were written around. The Vaporfly launched in 2017, pairing ZoomX, Nike's altered Pebax foam and the lightest and most responsive material in its range, with a full length carbon fibre plate designed to add spring to every stride, and peer research found it could improve marathon times by as much as 4.2 percent. Nothing in modern distance running has been the same since. Black with Metallic Gold Grain is the colourway that dresses that argument in the language of a trophy rather than of a laboratory, dark and low key until the light catches the gold and the shoe announces itself.
Two ways to use it. Marathon and half marathon race day, with a thin technical sock, nothing cotton, and a pace you have actually trained for, because this platform gives back most when you are working. Or one hard session a week, a threshold or long interval run, to keep your legs used to the geometry. Do not walk in it, do not use it in the gym, and do not treat it as a daily trainer, because super foams degrade with mileage faster than ordinary midsoles. Size with a thumbnail of toe room. For care, never machine wash, dry in shade only, and keep it in the box between efforts rather than in a kit bag.
The Vaporfly forced athletics to write shoe law. On 31 January 2020 World Athletics capped sole thickness at 40mm, limited shoes to one rigid plate and required genuine open retail availability, and compliant Vaporfly models remain legal to race in, which is a very different thing from the shoe being banned. Nike's standing in the sport goes back much further, to Steve Prefontaine, the first track athlete the company endorsed, and to a roster that has included Sebastian Coe, Carl Lewis, Michael Johnson and Allyson Felix. The Vaporfly is where that history stopped being about who was wearing the shoe and started being about the shoe itself.
Two components define this platform. ZoomX is the foam: extremely light, extremely responsive, and soft enough that it feels unstable if you are not running with intent. The full length carbon fibre plate runs through it, stiffening the shoe so that it rolls you forward rather than letting you sink and push. Together they produce a ride that feels efficient at pace and vague at a jog. The upper in this family is minimal by design, thin and breathable with very little structure, because everything that is not foam or plate is weight. The gold detailing sits on that thin upper as a finish rather than as reinforcement, so treat it gently.
