Released on 15 September 2022 and part of the Jordan Play Slide line. This release has a synthetic upper in Celestine Blue/White/Enamel Green. J Balvin is one of the artists Jordan Brand collaborates with, alongside Travis Scott, Drake, Billie Eilish, Eminem and Nicki Minaj, and the music side of that programme is where the brand takes its least literal risks. A slide is the perfect object for it. There is no court story to respect, no 1985 panel geometry to reproduce, no elephant print or patent leather obligation. What you get instead is the Jumpman applied to something purely recreational, made by a division that has been separate from the main Nike line since 1997 and that long ago stopped needing basketball to justify a release. The Super Play platform is built for exactly this: comfort first, personality second, heritage nowhere.
Two recipes. First, the obvious one done properly: shorts and a plain tee, with the slide as the only patterned thing you are wearing, ideally with bare feet or a very short sock. Second, sweatpants cuffed at the ankle with a hoodie, the recovery fit, where a slide is doing what it was actually designed for after training or a flight. Size true; slides that run long slap at the heel when you walk. Rinse after beach or pool use so salt and chlorine do not sit in the foam, dry them out of the sun, and do not machine wash them or the bond between strap and bed will suffer.
The music side of Jordan Brand's collaboration programme is not decoration, it is strategy. Air Jordan reached culture in the first place through basketball colliding with hip hop, with 2Pac, The Notorious B.I.G., Ice Cube and Jay-Z all putting the shoes into their lyrics, so signing artists as collaborators continues a relationship the brand did not have to invent. J Balvin sits in that group as an artist collaborator. A slide is the most accessible object in that whole apparatus, the piece of a five billion dollar business you can buy without a raffle, and that accessibility is part of why the artist releases matter.
A slide is a single strap over a moulded footbed, which means everything you feel comes from the foam and the contour rather than from lacing or an upper. Expect a soft, cushioned bed with a textured surface so a wet foot does not slide, and a strap that carries the graphic identity because there is nowhere else to put it. There is no break in period and no fit adjustment, so the size you buy is the size you live with. Foam slides absorb water and take a long time to dry fully, so rinse them rather than soaking them and let them air out standing on edge. Keep them out of prolonged direct sun, which stiffens foam and fades printed strap graphics.
