Released on 31 March 2021 and part of New Balance's 327 line. This release has a textile upper in Sea Salt/Black. The 327 is the New Balance archive redrawn with a graphic designer's eye. Where the 574 and the 99x line inherited their proportions from actual running shoes, the 327 exaggerates them, running the block N large across the side wall and turning the house mark into the whole design. Sea Salt is the colourway that suits that approach best, a pale, washed off white that lets the N read as shape rather than branding. New Balance has been a fit and support company since 1906, when it opened making arch supports, so even its most stylised shoe is built around a foot rather than a mood board. This is the brand at its most playful, and its lightest on the foot.
Pale and slim wants clean lines around it. Recipe one: cropped wide leg trousers in stone, a white tee and a linen overshirt, where the shoe finishes an outfit built entirely from off whites. Recipe two: dark straight jeans, a black knit and a tan trench, using Sea Salt as the single light point in the look. This is a warm weather and dry city shoe, good for long walks and travel, poor for rain and mud given the pale upper. Check width fittings, since a low profile shoe shows a bad fit fast. Protect them before first wear, brush dry, spot clean carefully, and dry away from heat.
New Balance spent decades being culturally invisible, then found that invisibility was the asset. The 990 family became the archetypal American dad shoe, worn for comfort rather than status, and normcore and then high fashion reclaimed that plainness in the 2010s, turning grey suede into a design position. The 327 is the brand's response to that reappraisal, a shoe designed knowing it would be looked at. Since April 2021, when Aime Leon Dore founder Teddy Santis became creative director of Made in USA, the archive has been treated openly as a fashion line, and the 327 belongs to the same shift. Sea Salt is its most fashion literate colourway, quiet enough to be styled rather than obeyed.
Sea Salt lives on texture. Pale uppers mix panelled sections with mesh, so the shoe changes surface as light moves across it, and the oversized block N does the heavy visual work rather than colour blocking. The 327 sits lower and thinner than the brand's cushioned runners, which makes it a walking shoe rather than a standing all day shoe. New Balance's cushioning systems, ENCAP with its polyurethane rim around an EVA core and ABZORB with its foam and rubber blend for dispersing impact, sit at the more structured end of the range and are the reference points for how the brand thinks about comfort. Multiple width fittings still apply, and a slim silhouette makes getting that right more important.
