Released on 30 September 2024 and part of adidas's Samba line. This release has a leather upper in Brown/Putty Grey/Gold Metallic. Brown Putty Grey is the Samba OG working entirely in earth tones, which is unusual for a silhouette that made its name on hard black and white contrast. You get a brown upper against a putty grey stripe and overlay, so the shoe reads warm and dusty rather than graphic. That choice fits where adidas Originals sits now: the Trefoil, designed in 1971 for the Munich Olympics and retired from performance in 1997, marks the part of the business that is about how the shoe looks with your clothes, not how it performs on a court. A Samba in brown is a Samba dressed for a wardrobe rather than a pitch.
Brown is the easiest Samba to dress up. Recipe one: charcoal or navy tailored trousers with a cropped hem, an unstructured jacket, and the brown upper does the work a loafer would without the formality. Recipe two: full earth, olive fatigues and a cream crew, where brown and putty grey slot in as the darkest and lightest points of the same palette. This is the Samba to wear to work, to dinner, to a wedding reception where the dress code is loose. Fit runs narrow and slightly long, so try your true size first. Brush the suede toe dry, condition the leather occasionally, and keep the putty stripe clean since that is the panel that ages the look.
The Samba's cultural weight comes from adoption, not advertising. adidas Originals became the base layer of European football terrace and casual dressing, the same route that turned the Superstar into a hip hop uniform after Run-DMC recorded My Adidas in 1986 unpaid and only then signed with the brand. Questlove has called that moment hip hop's tipping point. The Samba inherited the principle: a shoe that spreads because people wear it, then gets formalised later. adidas has repeatedly hired outside eyes to accelerate that, from Yohji Yamamoto's Y-3 to Pharrell Williams, but a brown Samba needs no co sign to be legible.
The Samba OG keeps a leather upper with a suede toe overlay, serrated Three Stripes stitched along the quarter, and a thin flat sole with a low toe spring. In this colourway the tonal separation is narrow, brown against putty grey, so the shoe's panelling reads through shadow and texture rather than colour. That makes material contrast the whole story: smooth leather against brushed suede at the toe. The low stack means very little cushioning, so these reward walking rather than standing on concrete all day. Mid brown hides scuffing far better than white does, and the putty grey stripe is where dirt will show first, so that is the panel to clean.
