Culture Note™
Released on 30 September 2022 and part of adidas's Forum line. This release has a leather upper. The Forum 84 High is the full original configuration: the raised collar, the ankle strap and the panelled leather upper adidas basketball put together in 1984 when it wanted a shoe that could lock a foot down through hard lateral movement. Almost nothing about it has been slimmed for modern taste, which is the appeal. Style code GX9054. Purple and gold on a high top with visible hardware is about as loud as adidas Originals gets without printing something on it.
A high top with a strap needs a leg line that respects it. Straight or slightly tapered jeans cropped to sit just above the collar shows the hardware, or wide grey sweatpants stacked over the top hides it and lets the purple flash as you move. Keep everything else neutral, since purple and gold does not want competition. Fasten the strap for real rather than leaving it loose if you want the shoe to feel like it was designed to. Sizing is true to size. Condition the leather to stop the crease lines drying pale, wipe the gold with a dry cloth only, and store them upright so the collar keeps its shape.
adidas basketball's cultural weight comes from two directions at once. On court, the Superstar of 1969 and its rubber shell toe was reportedly on more than 75 percent of NBA players by 1973, with Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and George Gervin among the earliest to make it a standard. Off court, Run-DMC released My Adidas on Raising Hell in 1986, unpaid, then had Madison Square Garden hold their shoes up, and the endorsement deal that followed was the first between a musical act and an athletic company. The Forum belongs to the moment those two worlds were closest, which is why a bold team style colourway still reads as heritage rather than costume.
The high cut is functional rather than decorative. The collar rises above the ankle bone and the strap crosses it, so once the strap is fastened the foot is genuinely held, which is why a Forum High feels solid in a way most lifestyle high tops do not. Leather panels carry the purple with gold used for the branding and accents, and the wide rubber cupsole underneath gives the flat, stable footprint the model was engineered around. The Three Stripes work as structure, the role they have had since adidas bought the mark from Karhu Sports in 1952. Metallic gold detailing dulls with abrasion rather than dirtying, and the purple leather will crease deeply across the forefoot.
