Released on 22 March 2024 and part of adidas's Gazelle line. This release has a suede upper in Collegiate Burgundy/Preloved Blue/Cloud White. The Gazelle is the shoe that proves adidas never needed a technology story to build an icon. It is a suede training shoe with a low collar, a thin sole and the Three Stripes running the length of the quarter, and it has survived on shape alone. Collegiate Burgundy is one of the strongest ways to buy it. Burgundy is a deep, slightly brown red that behaves like a neutral in a dark wardrobe and like a statement against denim, and it sits on suede better than almost any other colour because the nap gives it depth that flat leather cannot. This is the version people buy when they already own the black pair and the blue one.
Burgundy suede likes grey, cream, navy and olive, and it fights with black more than people expect. Try charcoal wool trousers, a cream fisherman knit and a navy overcoat for winter, or washed indigo jeans, a white tee and an olive chore jacket for everything else. Cropped or slightly tapered hems show the low profile properly, and mid grey socks tie the palette together. The Gazelle runs narrow and long with a thin sole, so size half down if you are between sizes and expect to feel the ground on long walks. Store with paper in the toe, protect the suede early, and clean scuffs before the nap sets.
adidas built its lifestyle business on shoes that other people chose for it. The Superstar and Stan Smith became the base layer of European football terrace and casual dressing, and the Gazelle rode the same wave, absorbed by music scenes and match day crowds who liked that it was cheap, comfortable and endlessly recolourable. It has since cycled through revivals roughly once a decade without ever being redesigned, which is rare for any shoe. The burgundy colourway in particular carries an older, more considered read than the primary brights the model is famous for, so it suits a wearer who wants the reference without the costume.
Suede across the upper, dyed through so the burgundy stays rich in the folds, with contrast stripes and a Trefoil marking it as Originals product, the logo adidas designed in 1971 for the Munich Games and now reserves for lifestyle lines. The stripes are stitched into the panel, which is how adidas has treated the mark since it bought it from Karhu Sports in 1952, when they reinforced the upper as much as they identified it. Underfoot is a thin rubber outsole with a low, flat profile and almost no stack. There is no cushioning claim to make and none is made. Brush the suede in one direction, spray it before first wear, and keep it out of rain because burgundy watermarks badly.
