Released on 1 October 2022 and part of the Handball line. This release has a suede upper in Core Blue/Cream White/Crystal White. The Handball Spezial exists because adidas built shoes for individual sports rather than for categories, a habit that started with Adi Dassler making purpose specific footwear in Herzogenaurach after watching athletes work. Handball is played fast on a polished indoor court, which demands grip, a low centre of gravity and a non marking sole, and the Spezial was engineered for exactly that. Core Blue with a gum sole is the model in its most classic register: a deep, flat blue that has become the shoe's signature tone in the years since it left the court, with the warm amber sole underneath providing the only contrast the design needs.
Two builds. Terrace correct: straight leg jeans in a mid or dark wash with a single turn up, a quarter zip or half button knit, and nothing else asking for attention. Or modern: black wide trousers stacked slightly on the toe with a heavy grey sweat, where the blue is the only colour present. Right for daily wear, football, pubs and travel, wrong for rain since suede takes water rings that dry unevenly. The Spezial runs long and narrow, so half a size down suits most feet, true to size if you are wide. Protect the suede before wearing, brush the nap up with a rubber suede brush, and clean the gum sole with an eraser or a damp cloth before dirt embeds, because gum discolours permanently once it sets.
The Spezial's second life came from British and European football casual culture, which took adidas court and training shoes and turned them into a uniform the brand had no hand in designing. That is the same mechanism that gave adidas its biggest cultural moment, when Run-DMC wrote My Adidas unpaid in 1986 and the group had Madison Square Garden hold shell toes in the air, with adidas executive Angelo Anastasio in the crowd, producing the first endorsement deal between a musical act and an athletic company. Blue Spezials are terrace shorthand, recognisable to a specific audience and unremarkable to everyone else, which is precisely why people who wear them keep wearing them.
Suede is the material, chosen for abrasion resistance on an indoor surface rather than for looks, and it gives the core blue its depth by holding shadow in the nap. The Three Stripes are stitched down the flank in the application adidas has used since the stripes reinforced the upper structurally. The gum rubber outsole is the functional heart of the shoe: tacky on varnished wood, non marking, and grippy even when the floor is dusty, which is what an indoor court player actually needs. The profile is low and slim, sitting under the ankle bone. Expect almost no cushioning and a shoe that becomes noticeably more comfortable once the suede has softened around your foot.
