Culture Note™
Released on 5 January 2023 and part of adidas's Samba line. This release has a suede upper in Collegiate Green/Footwear White/Gum 4. This is the Samba playing to its strengths: a deep collegiate green upper, a gum outsole, and a contrast grey toe overlay that breaks up the front of the shoe. The model was made for football on hard and frozen surfaces, a low flat trainer that put the player in contact with the ground, and the grey toe treatment is a direct descendant of that function, since the toe overlay exists to protect the shoe where the ball hits it. Executing that panel in a different colour turns a piece of engineering into the shoe's most recognisable styling feature. Collegiate green is one of adidas's own colour names and one of the tones the archive wears most convincingly.
Two ways. Preppy adjacent: mid grey pleated trousers with a break just above the toe, a white oxford shirt and a fine knit, where the grey toe ties into the trousers and the green does the work. Or casual: dark straight jeans, a green or olive jacket, and a white sock showing, keeping the palette tight. Good for daily wear, offices with a soft code, pubs and travel. Poor in rain since suede toes mark. Sambas run long and narrow, so most people size down half. Protect the suede toe before wearing, use a rubber suede brush to lift the nap, and clean the gum sole with a damp cloth or eraser before the dirt embeds, because gum rubber discolours permanently once it sets.
The Samba's move from pitch to pavement mirrors the biggest story in adidas history, which is that the brand's most important cultural moments were not bought. Run-DMC released My Adidas unpaid on 29 May 1986 and the endorsement deal followed, the first ever between a musical act and an athletic company. The Superstar reached over 15 million pairs sold in 2015 alone on the back of that. The Samba's rise came the same way, adopted by people who wanted flat, narrow and quiet footwear, and colourways like collegiate green with a grey toe are aimed at the part of that audience that wants an identifiable version rather than the default black.
The build is layered rather than complicated. A smooth base upper carries the deep green, the suede toe overlay in grey handles abrasion at the front, the Three Stripes are stitched to the flank in the structural application adidas has used since the stripes reinforced the upper, and a gum rubber outsole underneath grips hard surfaces without marking them. The two material approach means the shoe ages unevenly on purpose: the suede toe will nap and crease first while the smoother panels hold their finish. On green, the grey toe reads as almost silver in daylight and much darker indoors, which gives the pair a different character in different light.
