Designed by Horst Dassler and released on 1 April 2025 as part of adidas's Superstar line. This release has a leather upper in Cloud White/Core Black/Cloud White. The Superstar arrived in 1969 as a low top version of the Pro Model, and its moulded rubber shell toe existed for one reason: protecting players' feet under the basket. It worked so well that by 1973 the shoe was reportedly on more than 75 percent of NBA players, with Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and George Gervin among the early adopters. This Superstar 2 in white with a black sole flips the standard reading of the shoe. The familiar version puts its contrast on the stripes and the heel tab; here the darkness sits underneath, so the white upper appears to float on a black base. It is the archive's most copied silhouette detail, the shell toe, presented with the tonal balance turned upside down.
Two ways. The purist version: straight leg raw denim with a single cuff, a white tee, laces run flat and slightly loose, letting the shell toe sit proud. Or the modern read: black wide leg trousers stacked over the toe with an oversized black hoodie, so the white upper is the only bright surface and the black sole ties into the trousers. Superstars run slightly long, so most people take a half size down. Clean the leather with a damp cloth and mild soap, use a soft brush on the shell ribs where dirt collects, and skip the washing machine, which loosens the toe cap bond over time.
adidas got a second life it did not design. Run-DMC released My Adidas on 29 May 1986, unpaid and unprompted, and on 19 July that year at Madison Square Garden, with adidas executive Angelo Anastasio in the crowd at co-manager Lyor Cohen's invitation, the group told the audience to hold their shell toes in the air. Thousands did. The endorsement deal that followed was the first between a musical act and an athletic company, and Questlove has called that night hip hop's tipping point. The Superstar went on to become the base layer of European terrace dressing too, and adidas sold over 15 million pairs in 2015 alone, its best selling shoe of that year.
The shell toe is the engineering story: a moulded rubber cap wrapping the front of the shoe, ribbed so it flexes with the foot while taking impact that leather alone would not survive. Above it, a leather upper with the Three Stripes perforated and stitched down the quarter, which on the earliest Dassler shoes were structural reinforcement before they were a logo. The black sole unit underneath changes the maintenance equation entirely: the part of a white Superstar that always looks worst, the midsole edge, is now the part that hides dirt. It also visually shortens the shoe, which is why this treatment reads sharper on foot than the all white original.
