Culture Note™
Released on 14 June 2024 and part of Nike's Air DT Max '96 line. This release has a nubuck upper in Black/White/Varsity Maize. The mid nineties cross trainer was a category invented for a specific idea: one shoe for an athlete who did several things badly rather than one thing perfectly. The Air DT Max 96 is a survivor from that moment, and it looks like it, with a mid cut, aggressive strapping and a build that refuses to be discreet. It arrived in the period when Nike had already made cushioning a visible design feature, starting with the 1987 Air Max, and had moved into its Beaverton headquarters in 1990 with the first Niketown opening in Portland the same year. Black and white returns it in the least period specific colourway it has, which is why it works now.
Recipe one: loose straight leg jeans stacked over the ankle strap, an oversized crewneck and a cap, letting the shoe read as the heaviest object in an otherwise plain outfit. Recipe two: black track pants with a white tee, where the monochrome build ties directly into the palette and the strapping supplies all the detail. This is a bulky silhouette, so pair it with volume above rather than slim tapered trousers, which make the shoe look bolted on. Expect a firm, structured fit that needs a few wears to soften. Clean the white panels with a dedicated foam and a soft brush, and never soak a multi panel upper of this kind.
By 1980 Nike already held roughly half the US athletic shoe market and had gone public, and through the following decade it converted that scale into culture: the 1984 Michael Jordan signing, the 1987 Air Max, and Just Do It in 1988, which Advertising Age would later name one of the top five slogans of the century. The cross trainer belongs to the stretch immediately after, when Nike was signing across sports rather than concentrating on one. Shoes from that era are being worn again because their proportions are the opposite of the minimal, knit based silhouettes that followed, and because they carry an unmistakable decade in their shape.
This is a heavy, structured shoe, and that is the point. Cross training silhouettes of this era were built with reinforcement across the midfoot and a broad, stable base, because they were meant to handle lateral movement rather than repeated forward strides. Nike Air, the pressurised gas unit sealed in the midsole, carries the cushioning, and on a shoe from the Max family that unit is part of the exterior design rather than hidden inside. The black and white split makes the panelling legible from a distance, so every strap and overlay reads as a separate element. Keep the white sections cleaned regularly, since contrast builds are unforgiving once the light panels go grey.
