Designed by Peter Moore and released on 23 March 2020 as part of the Air Jordan 1 line. This release has the Gym Red/White colourway. Gym Red is the closest a Low gets to speaking in Jordan Brand's native tongue. The red, black and white Chicago palette functions as a brand colour in itself, and a red and white Low is that palette with the drama removed. The Air Jordan 1 was made for a rookie the league had not yet seen play a full season, released to the public on 1 April 1985, and built by Peter Moore around flat leather panels and a big Swoosh. Cut down to a Low, the model loses the ankle collar and the Wings mark and keeps only the proportion. That is what makes Gym Red work as a daily shoe rather than a collector's object. It is the most recognisable colour story in basketball, wearing an everyday silhouette.
Recipe one, the classic: mid blue straight leg denim, white tee, black bomber, red as the only accent in the fit. Recipe two, sharper: black tailored trouser with a cropped hem, grey knit, and the shoe deliberately loud against a monochrome outfit. Reds want the rest of the outfit to shut up. Lows sit low enough to wear with a cuffed trouser or a short, which is where the High cannot follow. Fit runs true and slightly narrow at the toe box, so go true unless you wear thick socks. These handle daily commuting well, but treat white leather and wet pavement as a bad pairing.
The Banned advertising taught the sneaker market that transgression sells, and it is worth being precise about what happened: the NBA's uniform policy required shoes to be at least 51 percent white, the shoe actually cited was the Nike Air Ship prototype Jordan wore before the AJ1 released, and Nike paid the 5,000 dollar per game fine and built a campaign on it. Red is the colour that story attached itself to. Wearing a red and white Low today is wearing the most efficient piece of marketing in sportswear history, distilled to two panels and a Swoosh, and it still reads instantly from across a street.
Leather panels over a rubber cupsole, a Swoosh stitched rather than printed, and a low collar that leaves the ankle free. The Low is the least structured member of the AJ1 family and the easiest to break in, because there is no padded collar to fight and no height to hold the foot upright. Red leather is also the most forgiving surface in the line. It hides scuffing, it takes conditioner well, and it does not show the grey haze that pale uppers pick up from pavement. The white panels are the maintenance job. Keep a magic sponge for the midsole sidewall and a leather cream for the red, and do not machine wash, because heat and drum tumbling separate cupsole adhesive faster than wear ever will.
