Culture Note™
Designed by Peter Moore and released on 28 April 2023 as part of the Air Jordan 1 line. This release has a leather upper in White/Pine Green. Jordan Brand spent its first decades proving a basketball shoe could leave the court, and the golf programme is the clearest evidence: the Air Jordan 1 High rebuilt for grass, here in pine green. The silhouette is Peter Moore's 1984 drawing, the one produced for Michael Jordan in November of that year and sold publicly from April 1985 after Nike had modestly targeted 3 million dollars over three years. Pine green is a course colour before it is a sneaker colour, a deep conifer tone that sits against fairway and clubhouse wood rather than hardwood. Putting it on the high top, the shape that carries the Wings logo and the full collar, is the point: the golf line does not soften the silhouette, it relocates it.
On the course, run it with a plain white or cream polo and stone trousers so the green stays the loudest thing you are wearing, and keep the belt leather brown rather than black. Off the course, it works with dark raw denim and an oatmeal cable knit, which pulls the pine towards heritage sportswear instead of golf uniform. The high collar wants a trouser that breaks slightly or a jean with enough stack to sit on it. Size as you would any Air Jordan 1, which runs long for many feet. Brush turf and grass stains off while they are fresh, dry the shoe away from direct heat, and let it rest a full day between rounds so the lining dries out completely.
Golf is where Michael Jordan's post playing public life is most visible, and Jordan Brand carrying its founding silhouette onto a course is a statement about the reach of the mark rather than about performance alone. The brand has spent years expanding past basketball: sole equipment provider to the Michigan Wolverines football programme from 2016, sponsor of Paris Saint-Germain from 2018, its first football club. Golf sits in the same logic. The Jumpman, the silhouette Peter Moore had Jordan recreate in Bulls gear, now reads on a polo and a course bag as fluently as it does on a jersey. Pine green is the version of that move made for people who want the heritage without the noise.
The upper keeps the Air Jordan 1 High's panel map, with pine green covering the quarter and toe and the collar rising over the ankle, so the shoe still fastens the way a basketball high does rather than like a modern golf shoe. What changes is underfoot: a golf specific traction outsole replaces the court pattern, built to hold through a swing on turf rather than to pivot on lacquered wood. Expect a treated upper, because golf shoes live on wet grass and morning dew in a way street pairs never do. The high collar gives you lateral support through rotation, which is the argument for using this shape on a golf course at all. Leather will still crease across the flex point.
