    Culture Note™

Designed by Peter Moore and released on 25 August 2022 as part of the Air Jordan 1 line. This release has a suede upper in Black/White/Light Smoke Grey/University Red. Elephant Toe puts the brand's most recognisable material code on the shoe that started the line. The grey cracked pattern arrived on the Air Jordan 3, the model Tinker Hatfield used to turn a signature basketball shoe into a design series, and it now signals Jordan on its own without any logo attached. Moving it onto the Air Jordan 1 Mid's toe box is a cross generational quotation: the 1985 pattern Peter Moore drew with Bruce Kilgore, wearing the III's skin. Nothing about the shoe's shape changes, but the panel your eye lands on first belongs to a different decade. Style code DM1200 016.
Grey print reads as a neutral, so this is an easy pair. First: black straight leg jeans, a grey marl sweatshirt that picks up the print tone, black socks, keeping the whole outfit in the print's own palette. Second: stone chinos with a single cuff, a white oxford and a navy knit, using the shoe as the textured element in a flat outfit. Occasion is everyday, office adjacent, weekends. Fit is true to size with a narrow midfoot and no break in needed on the Mid collar. Care: brush the print dry with a soft brush and never scrub it wet, since the texture holds moisture; damp cloth for the smooth panels only.
Elephant print is one of the few textures in fashion that works as a logo. It got there because the 3 landed while Air Jordan was being written into culture by the collision of basketball and hip hop: Nike's Spike Lee directed advertising, with Lee playing Mars Blackmon opposite Jordan, gave the shoes a screen life, and rappers including 2Pac, The Notorious B.I.G., Ice Cube and Jay-Z put them in records. Putting that texture on a 1 is a collector's in joke sold at general release price, and it is legible to anyone who knows the catalogue.
The Mid keeps the 1's leather panel map, separate eyestay, stitched Swoosh, padded collar under the ankle bone and a rubber cupsole with the forefoot pivot circle, with the wing tip toe rendered in elephant print rather than plain leather. That placement is practical as well as decorative: the print is a textured material that hides scuffing on the panel that scuffs most. It also creases differently from smooth leather, breaking into the pattern rather than across a clean surface, which is why print toed pairs tend to age better than plain white ones. Contrast panels around it are where dirt will show.
