Designed by Peter Moore and released on 28 May 2021 as part of the Air Jordan 1 line. This release has a leather upper in Purple Pulse/Arctic Punch/Glacier Blue. The Air Jordan 1 Mid is the version of the founding silhouette that lives entirely outside the game, and Purple Aqua is a good argument for why that matters. The original shoe, drawn by Peter Moore with Bruce Kilgore, was built around Chicago's red, black and white, colours that now function as brand colours in themselves. A purple and aqua makeup owes nothing to a team and everything to colour blocking for its own sake, using the Air Jordan 1's panel map as a grid to fill in. Style code 554724 500 places it in the long running Mid family, the workhorse of the line, the pair people actually wear daily rather than store. The colour is the whole proposition.
Purple and aqua both want a neutral base. Run it with light grey sweatpants and a white tee, letting the shoe be the only colour on you, or with black cropped trousers and a plain black crewneck so the two tones read like a graphic against a dark ground. Do not add a third bright colour anywhere. Cuff the hem to show the collar break, since a Mid loses its proportion under a long trouser. Air Jordan 1s run long for many feet, so size carefully. Keep purple leather out of extended sunlight, since saturated dyes shift first, and clean with a damp cloth rather than a soaking wash.
The Air Jordan 1 stopped being a basketball shoe and became a canvas, and the Mid is where that transformation is most visible: it is the model that carries the brand's most experimental colour work. The line's cultural standing was set early through Spike Lee's Nike advertising, with Lee playing Mars Blackmon opposite Michael Jordan, and through 2Pac, The Notorious B.I.G., Ice Cube and Jay-Z referencing the shoes on record. Later the brand's music side became formal, with Drake, Billie Eilish, J Balvin, Eminem and Nicki Minaj all working with Jordan Brand. Bright, non team colour makeups belong to that world rather than to the hardwood.
The Mid keeps the panel structure of the 1985 shoe with a collar that stops short of a full high, which is what makes it easier to wear under a trouser and quicker to break in. Purple carries the dominant panels with aqua used as the counter tone, so the two colours divide the shoe along the seams instead of blending. That is the correct way to read this makeup: the stitch lines are the design. A leather upper gives it structure and will crease across the toe box with wear. The lower collar means less ankle support than a High, which matters for nothing you will actually do in them and everything for how they look with a cropped hem.
