Designed by Peter Moore and released on 3 September 2021 as part of the Air Jordan 1 line. This release has a leather upper in Tan/White/Gum. Tan over a gum sole is a workwear and skate idea rather than a basketball one, which is what makes it interesting on the Air Jordan 1 Mid. The shape is Peter Moore's, drawn with Bruce Kilgore, the shoe whose initial 50,000 pairs sold out and which went past 150 million dollars in sales when Nike had planned for around 3 million dollars over three years, and it was designed in a world of white leather and team colours. Swapping that for a warm tan upper and an amber sole moves it into the same visual family as boots and canvas shoes, and it ages in the same direction: better with wear, not worse.
Warm neutrals want other warm neutrals. First: brown or olive workwear trousers with a cream tee and a canvas chore jacket, an outfit where the gum sole and the leather look like they came from the same place. Second: raw indigo denim with a white tee, the plainest possible pairing and the one that lets the tan darken naturally over months. Mids look right with a single cuff. Expect the gum to darken, expect the tan to develop a patina, and let both happen. Brush regularly, condition leather every few months, keep them out of prolonged wet, and dry slowly at room temperature.
The 1 became a cultural object because of a confrontation over the NBA's rule that shoes be at least 51 percent white, which Nike answered by paying the 5,000 dollar per game fine and building the Banned advertising around it rather than redesigning. Everything since has been the shape absorbing other subcultures: hip hop first, with 2Pac, The Notorious B.I.G., Ice Cube and Jay-Z naming the shoes, then streetwear and skate, then luxury via Dior, Off-White under Virgil Abloh and Comme des Garcons. A tan and gum makeup is the shape borrowing back from the skate and workwear side of that exchange.
Gum rubber is the detail to understand. It is softer and grippier than a white sole compound, it marks and darkens with use, and it will pick up colour from whatever you walk on, which is normal rather than a defect. Do not try to bleach it back. The tan upper above it shows dirt as a darkening rather than a stain and responds well to conditioning if it is leather. The Air Jordan 1 Mid holds its collar at ankle height. This listing has no style code and no published material breakdown, so check the upper material in hand. Clean the gum with mild foam and a cloth, and let the patina happen everywhere else.
