Designed by Peter Moore and released on 17 June 2014 as part of the Air Jordan 1 line. This release has a leather upper in Black/Black-Black. Triple Black is the Air Jordan 1 with the volume turned off. No contrast panel, no white midsole to frame the shape, just a single dark leather surface where the panel breaks are visible only as edges catching light. That is a real design decision on a silhouette whose entire history is built on colour blocking: the red and black that got Nike fined, the white and grey that made retros collectible. Under the blackout is still the shoe Peter Moore drew with Bruce Kilgore for a rookie the company signed in October 1984, released on 1 April 1985 after Nike had targeted a modest 3 million dollars over three years. Removing the colour is how you find out whether the shape can stand alone. It can.
This is the easiest Jordan to dress. Recipe one: black tailored trousers, a black merino crew and a charcoal overcoat, the sneaker reading as a soft shoe under formalwear without pretending to be a derby. Recipe two: raw indigo denim, a white oxford shirt and a black leather jacket, where the shoe anchors the bottom of a high contrast fit. Black socks always. The low cut means the shoe will show under a cropped trouser hem, so keep the break short and let the collar sit clear. Rain is survivable here in a way it is not on pale pairs, but salt and grit still dull the finish, so wipe them down after wet days and condition the leather when it starts to look grey rather than black.
The 1 reached culture through hip hop as much as basketball, with 2Pac, The Notorious B.I.G., Ice Cube and Jay-Z putting Jordan and his sneakers into records, and Nike's Spike Lee directed spots, in which Lee played Mars Blackmon, putting the shoe into film language. Blackout makeups belong to the later phase of that story, when the model had already become a wardrobe staple and buyers wanted it to disappear into an outfit rather than announce itself. It is the version that goes to work, to a bar and onto a flight without ever being the loudest thing in the room, which is why the pairs get worn out rather than kept boxed.
Leather across the whole upper in one tone, including the Swoosh, the collar and the heel, with the midsole and outsole blacked out to match. Tonal builds live or die on leather quality, since nothing else is doing visual work: the grain, the way the toe box creases and the sheen difference between panels become the design. Low collar, free ankle, flat rubber cupsole with the forefoot pivot circle underneath. Blacked out midsoles are far more forgiving in daily use than white foam, which is the practical case for this pair. Dust is the enemy rather than dirt, so a soft brush and an occasional wipe with a barely damp cloth keeps the finish deep instead of chalky.
