Designed by Tinker Hatfield and released on 18 May 2023 as part of the Air Jordan 3 line. This release has a leather upper in White/Lucky Green/Varsity Red/Cement Grey/Sail. The Air Jordan 3 is where Tinker Hatfield took over and turned a signature shoe into a design series, introducing the grey cracked elephant print and moving the Jumpman onto the tongue. Those two decisions have identified this brand ever since. Lucky Green pushes that architecture into a bright, almost sporting green, a colour the 3 rarely wears and one that changes how the elephant print reads: against red or black the print is a heritage cue, against a clean green it looks like graphic design. This is the model that proved the line could outgrow one player's endorsement and become a house with its own material language, wearing a colour that has nothing to do with Chicago.
Bright green needs a plain foundation. First: white or ecru wide leg trousers with a grey sweatshirt, which lets the elephant print tie the shoe to the top half and the green stand alone. Second: black denim with a plain white tee and a green free jacket, where the shoe is the only colour anywhere in the outfit. The 3 has a chunky profile, so keep hems short enough to show the midsole. Protector spray before first wear, brush the print dry with a soft brush, and use foam sparingly on the coloured panels. Dry away from heat, rotate with another pair, and store upright rather than stacked in a pile.
Elephant print now signals Jordan Brand on its own, which is a rare thing for a material to achieve. It comes from this model, and it survives because the 3 has never left the rotation. The line reached culture through basketball meeting hip hop, with 2Pac, The Notorious B.I.G., Ice Cube and Jay-Z referencing Jordan and his sneakers, and Spike Lee directing Nike's earliest advertising while playing Mars Blackmon opposite him. The collaboration programme has since taken these silhouettes to Off-White under Virgil Abloh, Dior, Supreme, KAWS and Comme des Garcons. A green 3 is the shape doing something the archive never asked it to do.
The elephant print panels are the technical detail worth understanding. That grey cracked pattern sits on the toe and heel, and its texture holds dirt in the cracks, which is why it should be brushed dry and never scrubbed wet. The Jumpman on the tongue dates the model as post third generation, replacing the Wings mark of the earliest era. Air cushioning entered the line at the second model and has never left. No stack height, foam name or leather grade is published for this pair, so treat what is visible as the whole spec. A bright green upper next to grey print means every mark shows on the colour and hides in the texture, so clean the two areas differently.
