Origin
Designed by Tinker Hatfield and released on 29 July 2023 as part of the Air Jordan 3 line. This release has a suede upper in Light Orewood Brown/Metallic Gold/Light British Tan/Palomino. Palomino is a warm tan, named for a horse coat, and it is one of the smartest colours the 3 has been given because it lets the model's signature material do all the talking. The 3 is where Tinker Hatfield took over the line and introduced elephant print, the grey cracked pattern that became the most recognisable material code the brand owns and now signals Jordan on its own with no logo attached. This is also the model that put the Jumpman on the tongue. In tan, the print sits against a natural tone rather than a team colour, and the shoe stops looking like sportswear entirely.
Utility
Recipe one: full earth, cream trousers, a chocolate brown knit, and a tan belt, so the shoe finishes a warm column and the elephant print is the only pattern in the outfit. Recipe two: contrast, black straight jeans and a black overshirt, where the tan lifts the bottom of the outfit and the grey print ties back to the black. Cream or tan socks. Fit true to size. Brush the print with a soft dry brush rather than wiping, since a cloth drags dirt into the grain, protect the tan panels before first wear, and clean any water spot immediately rather than letting it dry into a ring.
Influence
Elephant print did something almost no material graphic has managed: it left its shoe. Introduced on this model, it now appears across apparel and accessories and reads as the brand without any wordmark, in the same way the Jumpman does. That mark itself came from Peter Moore having Jordan recreate a mid leap pose in Bulls gear, and Nike defended it successfully when photographer Jacobus Rentmeester sued in 2015, with the Ninth Circuit affirming dismissal in February 2018 on the basis that the images were not substantially similar. The 3 sits at the junction of both of the brand's strongest visual assets.
Construction
Everything about the 3 is arranged around the elephant print panels at the toe and heel, with a smoother mid panel between them and a visible eyelet structure that frames the lacing. A warm tan base makes that contrast softer than the black and white versions, so you read the texture before you read the shape. Elephant print is a textured surface, which means it traps dust in the grain and needs brushing rather than wiping. Tan leather marks more easily than dark colours and does not hide water spotting, so treat it before wearing. The Low collar leaves the ankle free, so lace the lower rows firmly for a secure fit.
