Designed by Tinker Hatfield and released on 28 November 2020 as part of the Air Jordan 4 line. This release has a leather upper in White/Black/Tech Grey/Fire Red. Fire Red is the Air Jordan 4 in the palette Jordan Brand treats as its own. White, black and a hard red taken from Chicago, arranged across a silhouette Tinker Hatfield built once the line had moved past its first two models and become a design series in its own right. The OG designation matters here because it signals original proportions and original colour blocking rather than a modern reinterpretation. The 4 was the model that made Jordan footwear look engineered instead of drawn: the lace cage, the wing eyelets, the layered panels reading clearly from a distance. In Fire Red, that engineering is outlined in the brand's own colours, which is why this reads as the definitive version of the shoe rather than one option among many.
Recipe one, straight down the middle: mid blue denim with a slight taper, a white tee, and a black or red bomber picking up the accent panels. Recipe two, cleaner: black trousers cropped at the ankle, a grey knit, and the shoe as the only patterned thing in view. The 4 is bulky and needs a hem that stops rather than stacks, which rules out anything long and heavy. It runs true to slightly long, so narrow feet can size down a half. Best worn dry and on pavement rather than in rain, since white leather and mesh both hold water marks long after the shoe has dried.
The Chicago red, black and white palette works as a brand colour in its own right, which is why a Fire Red 4 needs no explanation to anyone who grew up with the line. That recognisability was built by advertising as much as basketball, with Spike Lee directing and appearing as Mars Blackmon in the earliest campaigns, and reinforced by hip hop, where 2Pac, The Notorious B.I.G., Ice Cube and Jay-Z put Jordan sneakers into their lyrics. The 4 sits at the centre of that overlap. It is also a model Jordan Brand has handed to collaborators, including Travis Scott's Cactus Jack work across the 1, 4 and 6.
Nike Air cushioning has been part of the line since the second model and the 4 carries it, so there is real compression under the heel rather than the flat feel of an early AJ1. White leather forms the body, mesh fills the side panels for airflow, and the plastic wing eyelets pull lacing pressure out to the edges of the foot for lockdown. White is the maintenance burden. It shows everything, the mesh holds dust in its weave, and the red panels can transfer onto white if the shoe is stored damp. Brush the mesh dry, clean the leather with foam rather than water, and keep the midsole sidewall separate from any cleaner strong enough to lift paint.
