Designed by Tinker Hatfield and released on 7 October 2023 as part of the Air Jordan 6 line. This release has a suede upper in Black/Bright Concord/Aquatone. Aqua is a colour with its own history inside Nike, a bright blue green that reads as early nineties the moment you see it, and the Air Jordan 6 is a shape from that era of the line. By the sixth model Tinker Hatfield had already moved the series past panelled basketball shoes into sculpted forms with their own identity, a shift that began with the third model and its elephant print and Jumpman tongue. Running aqua across the 6 pulls the silhouette away from the red, black and white palette that functions as the brand's own colours and drops it into something coastal and dated in the best sense. It is a retro that admits it is a retro.
Bright accents on a dark base want simple clothes. First: black cargo trousers with a plain black tee and a black cap, letting the aqua be the only colour in the outfit and the shape do the rest. Second: grey sweatpants with a white tee and a light hoodie, a softer combination where the aqua reads as sportswear rather than as a statement. The 6 has real volume, so hems should sit on the collar and not over the toe. Brush dust off before it embeds in any textured panel, keep them out of heavy rain, dry at room temperature, and store them upright with paper or a tree so the moulded upper keeps its line.
Retro colourways are how this brand stays in circulation, and the reason there is an audience for them at all is the collision of basketball and hip hop that carried Air Jordan into culture. Rappers including 2Pac, The Notorious B.I.G., Ice Cube and Jay-Z referenced Jordan and his sneakers, and the Banned advertising had already taught the market that a sneaker could be a position rather than a product. Sneaker collecting became a mass activity off the back of it, with original 1985 pairs trading around 20,000 dollars on StockX and the resale market valued at roughly 2 billion dollars. Aqua is a collector's colour more than a general one, and that is its appeal.
The 6 is a moulded shoe, so the interest is in the curves rather than the seams: a sculpted upper, a shaped heel and a toe that rolls instead of folding. This line has carried Nike Air cushioning since its second model. Aqua accents against a darker base are a contrast game, which means the bright panels are the ones that will show wear first and the ones people look at. Nike has not published the material split, foam density or any measurement for this pair, and nothing is invented here to fill the gap. Give any nubuck or suede areas a protector spray before first wear, and clean the bright panels with foam and a soft brush rather than water.
