Released on 5 March 2024 and part of On Running's Cloud 5 line. This release has a mesh upper in Flamingo/Pearl. Flamingo Pearl is the Cloud 5 at its most cheerful: a warm pink set against a soft luminous off white, a colourway that has nothing to prove and knows it. The Cloud 5 is the generation that made On ordinary in the best sense, the version most people met first, descended from the Cloudracer that arrived in 2012 and was raced by Swiss triathlete Nicola Spirig. Behind it is a company founded in Zurich in 2010 by Olivier Bernhard, a former Swiss Ironman champion, with David Allemann and Caspar Coppetti, built on a prototype made from a cut up garden hose after Nike declined to take the idea forward.
Pink works hardest when the rest of the outfit is plain. Recipe one: grey sweatpants, a white tee and a black cap, where the flamingo tone is the only colour in play. Recipe two: light denim, a cream knit and a tan crossbody, a warm build where pink and pearl feel like the softest part of a soft palette. Use them for walking, easy runs, weekends and travel on dry ground, not for wet or unpaved surfaces. Fit true to size with a snug midfoot. Waterproof spray before first wear, clean pale sections with foam rather than water, wash laces separately, and store them out of sunlight so the pink stays even.
The Cloud 5 arrived as On was becoming a mainstream name, in the stretch between Roger Federer taking an equity stake in November 2019, The Roger launching in July 2020 and the September 2021 NYSE listing under ONON that raised about 746 million dollars. That is when colourways stopped being purely functional. On's cultural weight sits in design rather than in subculture, which is why a soft pink running shoe reads as a deliberate aesthetic choice on this brand rather than as a seasonal throwaway. It is the everyday model doing the work, wearing a colour that would look out of place on a race shoe.
CloudTec is a structural cushioning system, foam engineered into specialised geometries whose cavities compress horizontally as well as vertically, absorbing impact and giving multi directional support through the stride. On the Cloud 5 that structure sits under a light, nimble chassis, so the sensation is quick rather than plush. A pink and pearl colourway leaves nowhere for dirt to hide, which is the trade for how good it looks fresh. Protect the upper before first wear, deal with marks the same day rather than letting them set, and use a foam cleaner with a soft brush on the sole walls instead of soaking a structured midsole.
