    Culture Note™

Designed by Peter Moore and released on 20 August 2022 as part of Nike's Dunk line. This release has a leather upper in Black/Black/Pilgrim/Off Noir. Scrap is a name with a position behind it. Nike has spent years putting its own offcuts back to work through Nike Grind, the programme that recycles manufacturing waste and worn shoes into new product and surfaces, and a Dunk Low built around leftover material is that thinking applied to the most collected silhouette in the catalogue. Doing it in black is the smart choice: black hides the mismatch that makes patchwork construction possible, so the shoe reads as a single tonal object until you look at where one material meets another. Style code DM0128 001 identifies it. It is the least loud way Nike has made a point about waste, and probably the most wearable.
All black with texture is the easiest thing to wear badly, so use contrast. Pair it with washed grey denim and a black bomber to let the different material finishes catch the light, or with a full black outfit and one raw fabric on top, a heavy overshirt or a wool coat, so the shoe's patchwork looks intentional. It works for city evenings, travel and everyday wear in poor weather, which black tolerates. Fit is standard Dunk Low with the usual slight length, so size down half if between. Brush suede sections dry, use a damp cloth on the leather only, and never treat the whole shoe with one product.
Nike Grind exists because the company's scale makes waste a real problem, and turning that into product rather than a report is a very Nike move: the brand has always preferred to argue through objects. The Dunk was a useful vehicle because Nike SB spent two decades making the silhouette culturally serious, occasionally painfully so, as when the line's 2005 use of Minor Threat's album art drew a rebuke from Ian MacKaye and an apology from Nike on 27 June that year. A shoe made from remnants lands differently on a model that collectors treat as currency, and that friction is the interesting part.
Mixed materials are the whole build, which means panels that do not necessarily match in texture, grain or sheen, held together by a shared black tone. That gives you a shoe with more visual depth than a standard leather Dunk and more variation between pairs, since patchwork construction is never perfectly repeatable. Practically, mixed panels age at different rates, so expect suede to nap, leather to crease and any canvas to soften, all on the same shoe. Underneath sits the usual Dunk Low platform, flat and firm rather than cushioned, with tread thinking that goes back to Bill Bowerman pouring rubber into a waffle iron in the early 1970s.
