Culture Note™
Designed by Peter Moore and released on 31 October 2023 as part of the Air Jordan 1 line. This release has a satin upper in Brown Kelp/Sky J Light Olive/Sail. Brown, kelp, sky and light olive on one shoe is a long way from red, black and white, and that is the point of an SE. Special editions are where Jordan Brand tests palettes its heritage codes would never allow, and earthy multi tone builds are the modern women's language of the line. The silhouette is unchanged: the 1985 shape Peter Moore drew with Bruce Kilgore, cut low. Since 1997 the line has run as Jordan Brand, a standalone division inside Nike with its own apparel, roster and design programme, which is exactly what gives a colourway like this permission to exist without any court reference at all.
Two ways to run it. First, olive wide leg trousers with a cream knit, pulling the earth tones out of the shoe and letting the sky blue be the only surprise. Second, brown or tan cargo trousers with a white tee, a full warm palette where the shoe ties the whole thing together at ground level. Do not add a competing bright colour: this shoe already holds four. Lows suit heat, travel and long walking days. Protect the upper before first wear, brush dust off weekly, and keep it off wet streets since pale panels and light olive both mark permanently.
The modern brand's design confidence comes from a collaboration programme that runs across streetwear, luxury and music, with partners including Off-White under Virgil Abloh, Dior, Comme des Garcons, Supreme and KAWS, and Travis Scott, Drake, Billie Eilish, J Balvin, Eminem and Nicki Minaj on the music side. Palettes that once would have looked wrong on a Jordan now read as normal because those partners widened the range. On the sport side Jordan Brand's signed WNBA athletes include Maya Moore and Jordin Canada, the roster context for a women's build like this one.
Four tones across one Low is an exercise in panel discipline. The 1's structure gives you distinct zones, toe, quarter, swoosh, eyestay and heel, so each colour can sit in its own block and the shoe still reads as one object instead of a patchwork. Warm browns and olives next to a cool sky blue is a deliberate temperature clash, and it works because the blue occupies the smallest area. Multi tone uppers often mix finishes, so clean gently and test any product on a hidden section first. Dry brush between wears, keep the pale sections away from dye transfer, and let the shoe air out rather than sealing it straight into a box.
