Culture Note™
Designed by Peter Moore and released on 21 September 2018 as part of the Air Jordan 1 line. This release has a leather upper in Court Purple/Sail-Black. The Retro High in Court Purple is the original silhouette wearing a colour the 1985 shoe never had. Peter Moore's design, made with Bruce Kilgore, was built around Chicago red, black and white, the palette that still works as brand colour for the whole house alongside the number 23. Purple sits deliberately outside that. On a high, where the collar gives the shoe height and presence, a saturated non team colour turns the model from a reference into an object you chose for how it looks. The 1.0 in the name marks it as the first execution of that pairing rather than a later revision, which is how the line has always talked about its own colourways: version numbers instead of season names.
Recipe one, grounded: black straight leg trousers with a slight stack, a heather grey crewneck and a black coat, so the purple is the only colour in the frame. Recipe two, sport heavy: dark denim, a white tee, a purple flecked knit or a varsity jacket that repeats the tone once and no more. Occasion is evening and street; the high collar is the version that photographs. Fit is standard sneaker length, and a mid crew sock protects the ankle while the collar breaks in. Care: keep the white midsole and Swoosh clean with a soft brush and mild soap, condition the purple leather sparingly, and store upright and cool so the collar keeps its shape.
The Air Jordan 1 is the shoe that turned sneakers into a collecting culture. The Banned advertising, built on the NBA's uniform rule requiring at least fifty one percent white and Nike's choice to pay the fine, made transgression a selling point. Spike Lee, directing and playing Mars Blackmon, put the shoe into film language, and 2Pac, The Notorious B.I.G., Ice Cube and Jay-Z made it a lyric. Original 1985 pairs have changed hands near twenty thousand dollars on resale platforms, anchoring a market valued around two billion. A purple high carries none of that history in its colours and all of it in its shape, which is the most interesting position a retro can occupy.
Leather panels in purple, black and white following the original toe, quarter, Swoosh and heel divisions, with the high collar padded at the ankle. The first Air Jordan came before the Nike Air cushioning the line adopted from the second model, so the underfoot story is a stitched cupsole and foam wedge rather than a visible air unit. That means firm, flat, court honest feel and a break in period of a week or two while the collar softens. Wings branding at the collar, the earliest mark the house used. Deep purple leather takes creasing well because the colour is dark enough to absorb shadow, but the white midsole is the panel that will date the pair, so it is the one to keep clean.
