    Culture Note™

Light Blue is the Mexico 66 at its most open and least loaded. There is no film reference in a pale blue, no national kit, no tiger. What is left is the shape Onitsuka drew in 1966 when it built the Mexico line as a flagship to run at Adidas and Puma, released two years ahead of the 1968 Mexico City Games and the first shoe to wear the Tiger Stripes. A soft, chalky blue across the crossed stripes over a pale body makes the silhouette look longer and lower than it does in high contrast colours, because there is nothing to break the eye as it travels from heel to toe.
Two recipes. First, ecru wide leg trousers with a white shirt worn open over a vest, where the blue is the only colour and the fit stays airy. Second, mid wash straight jeans with a navy knit, using the pale blue to bridge the denim and the jumper instead of contrasting with them. This is a spring and summer colourway and it suits daytime plans and travel far better than nights out. Take your usual size in the narrow, slightly long last. Treat the leather with a colourless protector before first wear, keep it away from wet dark denim, and spot clean marks immediately rather than letting them set.
The Mexico 66's second life started in 2002, when Asics revived the dormant Onitsuka Tiger name as a fashion label, and its third started in the early 2020s when the wider market swung away from chunky sneakers toward slim, low profile silhouettes. Soft colours are the clearest evidence of that second swing: a shoe that has to look good next to tailoring and wide leg trousers needs a palette that behaves like clothing. Note that this is a fashion brand rather than a performance running one, and that it stands apart from Asics Tiger and Asics Sportstyle, which are different lines entirely.
Slim leather upper over a narrow last, low flat profile, thin cupsole and Tiger Stripes stitched on as structural overlay panels holding the quarter together. In a low contrast pairing like this, the stitching lines and the panel edges become the detail you actually notice, so the finishing has nowhere to hide. Light blue leather sits between a pastel and a neutral in how it wears: it will not shadow the way white does, but it lifts colour from wet denim, so keep the two apart in rain. Underfoot the shoe is flat, thin and flexible with no arch support, giving ground feel rather than isolation.
