Culture Note™
Released on 27 January 2022 and part of the Mexico 66 line. This release has a leather upper in Birch/Silver. The SD build is the elevated reading of the Mexico 66, and Birch Silver is the most restrained way to use it. Birch is the warm off white that reads like unbleached paper; silver runs the crossed Tiger Stripes as a metallic line rather than a block of colour. The base shape has not changed since 1966, when Onitsuka built the Mexico line as a flagship capable of standing next to Adidas and Puma and released it ahead of the 1968 Mexico City Games. Pairing an aged looking neutral with a reflective stripe is a deliberately modern move, and it is why this pair reads dressed up rather than sporty.
Two recipes. First, stone coloured pleated trousers with a Birch knit and a grey blazer, where the silver stripes read as hardware against a soft neutral column. Second, black straight jeans with a white shirt, using the shoe to warm up an otherwise cold monochrome. This is a dry weather pair, since neither the metallic finish nor the pale leather likes rain, so keep it for hard floors and clean pavements rather than long walks on grit. Take your usual size in the narrow, slightly long last, and expect a snug forefoot for the first week. Wipe the silver panels with a soft dry cloth only, never a brush, and clean the Birch separately with a soft brush and a colourless conditioner.
The brand's current range is built on tiering rather than on one shoe. Nippon Made is the top line, produced in Japan with specialised leather treatment and Japanese craft finishing; The Onitsuka is the formal leather line; and the label now runs apparel, bags, denim, accessories and fragrance alongside the footwear. SD executions sit in that logic as the more finished version of the everyday flat. It is worth remembering that this is a fashion label revived in 2002 rather than a performance brand, and it is distinct from Asics Tiger and Asics Sportstyle, which are separate lines with separate design intent.
Slim toed, narrow lasted and low profile, with a thin cupsole and Tiger Stripe overlays stitched across the quarter as structural panels. The SD execution presents that architecture with a more considered upper finish than the standard make up. The silver stripes are a metallic coating, so they scuff rather than stain and cannot be brushed clean once abraded, while the Birch leather is soft, absorbent and quick to crease at the toe. That combination means two different care routines on one shoe. Underfoot the story is the same as every Mexico 66: flat, thin, flexible, with ground feel rather than cushioning and no arch support at all.
