Released on 24 January 2022 and part of the Mexico 66 line. This release has a suede upper in Glacier Grey/Glacier Grey. Glacier Grey on the slip on is the most minimal thing the brand makes. Take the 1966 Mexico shape, built as a flagship for the 1968 Mexico City Games and the first shoe to wear the Tiger Stripes, then remove the laces, the eyestay and most of the colour. What is left is a pale, cool grey outline with the crossed stripes running across the quarter as the only feature. Glacier Grey is a light grey with a blue cast rather than a warm one, which suits a shoe stripped this far back, because a warm grey would have made it look like a house shoe rather than a design decision.
Two recipes. First, grey wide leg sweatpants with a white tee and a light knit over the shoulders, a genuinely easy fit where the shoe's missing laces keep the ankle clean. Second, black cropped trousers with a grey shirt, a smarter reading where the tonal grey does the work. This is the best travel shoe in the range, since you can get in and out of it without bending down. Size carefully and try on if you can, because there is no lacing to adjust later. Wipe the grey upper with a barely damp cloth, and keep the elastic gore away from harsh cleaners so it does not stiffen.
A laceless Mexico 66 only exists because the brand stopped being a sports company. Asics revived the dormant Onitsuka Tiger name in 2002 and positioned it as fashion, and the reissued Mexico 66 became the model that carried the relaunch. Since the early 2020s the shape has been a staple of sneaker culture again, driven by the swing away from chunky sneakers toward slim, low profile silhouettes and by celebrity wear and younger buyers. The slip on is the most fashion led branch on that tree, and a neutral grey is the version of it that gets worn on ordinary days rather than saved for a look.
The laceless build changes how the shoe holds you. There is no lacing to tighten, so the fit depends entirely on the elastic gore at the throat and on the narrow last, which makes correct sizing more important here than anywhere else in the range. The Tiger Stripes remain panel overlays across the quarter, doing structural work on a shoe that has given up its main source of adjustment. The profile stays low and the cupsole stays thin, so ground feel is identical to the laced version. Pale grey is easier to live with than white or pastel, showing marks at the toe and sole edge but not shouting about them.
