Origin
Released on 4 October 2024 and part of New Balance's 1906 line. This release has a textile upper in Fatigue Green/Light Purple Metallic. The 1906R is named for the year New Balance began, when William J Riley founded the New Balance Arch Support Company near Boston to make arch supports rather than shoes. The R is the retro leaning build of that platform, a mid 2000s performance runner shape with sculpted panelling and visible cushioning. The Rose Runner is the Jack Harlow version of it, released with a special box, and the rose framing gives the colourway its whole character: soft pinks and dusty tones across a shoe whose engineering was drawn for speed. That contrast is the point. New Balance's collaboration programme has always been built on independents and named partners rather than on mass celebrity endorsement, and this belongs to that pattern.
Utility
Rose tones on a technical runner want restraint everywhere else. First recipe: grey sweatpants with a cream hoodie and a black cap, letting the pinks be the only colour in the outfit. Second: black straight jeans, a white tee and a black bomber, where the rose reads as a deliberate break rather than a soft one. Avoid pairing with red or burgundy, which flattens it. The structured upper suits a hem stopping just above the laces. Take your usual length and adjust the width fitting. Protect the suede before first wear, brush rather than wash, and store out of sunlight because rose is the tone that bleaches fastest.
Influence
New Balance's partner list has always leaned on designers and independents rather than on scale: Paul Smith on a 576 in June 2018, Kawhi Leonard on the OMN1S from February 2019, Action Bronson across several models including a 990v6 Baklava, and Aime Leon Dore, whose founder Teddy Santis was appointed creative director of Made in USA in April 2021. That is the company a named Rose Runner keeps. The underlying goodwill comes from somewhere plainer: the 990 became the archetypal American dad shoe, documented on Steve Jobs, Ben Affleck, Jennifer Garner and Hilary Duff, and it is that ordinariness fashion reclaimed.
Construction
A layered upper of engineered mesh with synthetic and suede overlays in rose toned shades, blocked so the structural panels separate from the base and the block N sits inside the architecture rather than on top of it. Underneath is New Balance's ABZORB cushioning, its proprietary foam and rubber polymer blend engineered to disperse heel strike impact before it travels into the knees and hips, plusher and lighter than the ENCAP polyurethane and EVA construction that supports the 990 and 574. The special box is part of the release rather than the shoe, so keep it if you care about resale. Rose suede fades in sun and marks with water, both of which show as lighter patches.
