New Balance 9060 Grey Matter Timberwolf

Layered greys make this the most versatile 9060 palette. Recipe one is head to toe: grey sweatpants, a grey hoodie, a black cap, where the two shoe tones sit inside the same family and only the shape stands out. Recipe two is warm contrast: brown wide leg trousers with a cream knit, letting Timberwolf tie into the browns while Grey Matter keeps it cool. Give the shoe trouser volume and avoid a slim taper. It is a walking, travelling and everyday city shoe. Grey collects dust visibly, so brush it before it works into the seams, clean with mild soap and a soft cloth, and dry away from direct heat.

Grey is where New Balance's accidental cultural life is concentrated. The 990 family became the archetypal American dad shoe, the grey suburban runner chosen for comfort rather than status, with Steve Jobs a documented wearer and Ben Affleck, Jennifer Garner and Hilary Duff documented in the model, and normcore and then high fashion reclaimed exactly that plainness in the 2010s. The 9060 takes the colour and abandons the modesty, which is the brand's way of showing the archive is now material to work with rather than a legacy to protect. Aime Leon Dore founder Teddy Santis has run the more reverent side of that project as creative director of Made in USA since April 2021.

Two greys of different temperature give a sculpted shoe its shading. Grey Matter sits cooler across the main panels while Timberwolf warms the base, the overlays and the side wall block N, so the 9060's curved side wall and its exaggerated midsole shaping are read as light and shadow rather than as blocks of colour. The shoe carries real underfoot volume, inherited from the 99x line, and New Balance's ENCAP approach is the philosophy behind it, a moulded polyurethane rim encapsulating a soft EVA core so the midsole stays supportive with low compression set. Use the width fittings, which are the brand's oldest and most practical technical promise.
